Does anyone on this board own or have experienced the Viper 791xv remote start and alarm system? If so, anything bad about them? How much would I be looking at to have this thing installed in a Celica or any other 02 plus Toyota vehicle? I live in SoCal by the way for those audio/alarm heads in the area....

I have this in my 04 Celica GT-S, There nothing bad about the alarm only it does not light up. You can do many things with it like add it to pop you doors and what not. It cost me 150 to have it installed and got the system for 220 from a friend.

If my car was fixed, I'd have one right now. In the meantime:

I have one Blue, top of the line Viper unit.
One thing I dislike about it is the sensitivity. There aren't very many settings on it.
I took it to be professionally installed and a few months later I noticed I had received a small door ding from some careless person....and my alarm didn't go off. I called the install place planning to schedule an appointment to get the sensitivity turned up but the guy said that if they turned it up anymore it would be going off too easily. So I guess I was looking for a medium between the two and there isn't one. Now I may be wrong since I haven't looked at it myself.
Other than that it's awesome, comes with an LED remote transmitter with extended range. It even matches my celi (spectra blue) which you have as well. It chirps nicely and comes with 5 outputs for all those extra needs. Remote start, which they didn't install because they aren't allowed too. But ASheva10 and redlinee46s3 have both installed this on their own. I know ASehva10 installed the remote start on his 5 speed, I'm not sure if redlinee46s3 did on his 6 speed though.

What do u mean it doesnt light up? The remote or illuminated entry? it does both. Illimunated entry needs to be wired up by the installer. As for the remote, it lights up too, it actually lights up amber. See the little blue button on the back of the 2 way remote on thenbottom next to the battery cover, push it.
As far as the 791XV, it's gotta be one of the best and most reliable systems out there.

I have it. My parents bought it for me for my birthday but I believe it ended up costing somewhere around $700 - 800 with installation from Best Buy. I like it. I bought my Celica used and it didn't come with the factory security system, and I feel a lot better knowing my car is protected, and I'll know if someone messes with it. Plus, the remote start works from far distances. I can start it from my second story bedroom without problems.

I bought it for 175 shipped new and installed it myself, takes about 4 hours to install... if you know how to cut wires and use barrel plugs... you can install it yourself :)

Hold the button down and it will set to automatically back light.
Illuninated entry is when the domelights cut on when you automatically unlock the doors and automatclly shuts off when you lock. It illuminates your entry with the remote.

So after we have held the button down when is the remote suppose to glow? All the time? Cause we were holding it down then tried to unlock and lock but it never lit up.
I don't think they installed illuminated entry on my Celica. Is there a certain position the dome light switch has to be in for illuminated entry to work?

hmmm, I'll have to check the remote. I know for sure it does light up.
The illuminated entry on the celica has to have the switch to the auto position. If it's switched off, it will never work.

I'll try the illuminated entry in the meantime. Thanks for letting us know though man.

as far as the remote goes: you have to hold down all the buttons until it plays this one song and then you hit one of the buttons to make it turn from illuminated or not, another one will make it vibrate or not and another will change the frequency at which it checks for the car, not %100 about this, but this is what i remember
as far as the cars interior being illuminated, you have to leave the switch on the dome to "door" or else it doesnt work.

Alright, I did some reading in the manual and you have to hold down the "Program" button on the back of the remote. It's the black button with the "P" on it. It will beep. Then press the Unlock button. It will glow amber and beep once indicating illumination has been turned ON. Press the Unlock button again and the glow will go away and it will beep twice indicating the illumination has been turned OFF. After a few seconds of not pressing any buttons it will beep again which means you have exited Programming mode. Remember though, having the remote's illumination feature ON will drain more life out of the AAA battery.
Now off to try the dome light illumination....

yep, the feature to have the remote's backlight ON is not set up be default. I actually don't know why they didn't have it set to ON from factory.
I had this alarm on my celica, the thing with the alram is that it has so many features that you don't even know about until you read the manual.
Deffinately a good choice if you are looking for an alram that does more than just lock/unlock.

It kills the battery rather quickly when you have it on. I disabled mine because of that.

It's called a pager. And it pages the remote. You have to be within range though. 791vx is a nice alarm with remote start.

So what's a reasonable price on installation should I be expecting? I know this unit is very cheap off Ebay these days, so I just wanted to know how much would be spent on installation. I don't have the patience to do this all myself. My time is limited during the day to even attempt this. If installation is expensive then I might have to do it myself. I've always heard good things about this alarm.
Thanks for the feedback fellas. I appreciate it...

Atleast 150 for install, cheaper if you have a friends that can do it.

I bought a Compustar 2-way alarm with the lcd. I love my alarm it has basically everything except the satelite uplink. The remote is easily usable inside 1/2 mile claims the manual (i haven't measured but it goes hella far). I got it for $300 installed at a sport compact shop in town. They installed it way up under the dash behind the spedo so i can see it being hard to disable if stolen or even work on by yourself. i don't have to worry bout adjustments because it came with a 3 yr warranty for parts AND labor. Plus the LCD car kinda looks like a celi/triburon mix. A+

I had mine installed professionally for $100.
Rene there were some fellas in the NorCal forums during the summer that were talking about hook-ups on the install. You might check there too. Or So Cal.
