View Full Version : Well I guess my 2nd gear Synchro is Gone.. Question-

Well tonight my 2nd gear synchro left the building. Anytime I downshift to 2nd, even while double clutching and rev matching, it grinds absurdly. Plus my 3rd gear shift has been notchy forever.
So to all of you that had these problems, have u had them fixed under warranty? I'm at 45K miles.. but powertrain warranty is up to 60K.. so that should cover this right? For those that had to pay, how much am I looking at here?
P.S.- Any reason why I would be getting a notchy, grindy shift in 3rd (not always, some times).. during both upshifting and downshifting?
P.P.S.- All the other gears are fine.

do you still have the stock clutch?
is the clutch holding up or is it slippin yet?

Clutch is stock, yes. And its hold up just fine so far... though I'm a bit afraid to say anything now that this happened!

so it happens all the time.
say you got woke up and went for a drive, let it warm up and tried to go into lift and shift at 8k. would it grind the first time taking it this far?
or does it happen after driving your car for a while?

Nope. ONLY Grinds on downshifts unless I'm going like 20 mph and then downshift to second. Every downshift into second above that grinds. Started all of a sudden tonight.

are you sure your clutch is fine?
were you driving it a lot tonight, getting on it a lot?
i noticed after driving the car all day the stock clutch was really soft and mooshy. i would try to go past 8k and shift and just grind grind grind.
this happens usually when i raced my car or got on it a lot in the day.
i just got the blitz active clutch in and it doesn't ever do the grinding in second anymore. even if i push the car the entire day.
it might be me but it seems like it was my clutch that was so bad that it got to that point and would only happen when i pushed the car a lot. its fine now...

I don't know... its hard to tell what to look for, but I know that my clutch isn't slipping for what I can tell. But here was the situation. I just started driving tonight.. didn't drive it all day. Like 5 minutes into the drive I down shift to second and I hear a slight grind... the next time I tried it, it grinded completely.. and after that it kept doing it unless I downshifted to second going like 20... It doesn't do it on upshifts at all though...

yeah take it in than.
i thought my syncros were going until i replaced my clutch but it sounds like yours are shot and will get worse.
you have the extended warranty so they should cover it.

It sounds like your syncros, so it doesn't grind on the 1-2 shift at like high RPM?? well either way its cover under warranty but expect to get the 2002 wide shiftgate. Good luck with it. Lates

No, no grind at high RPM.. but its not extremely smooth either.

Static, this does not sound like your syncro's to me. If it were, it would definately not grind when you double clutch. When you double clutch you aren't useing the syncro's at all. You could litterally take the syncro's out of your car and get a smooth grindless shift if you double clutch.

Hey, here's and idea, maybe you are low on transmition fluid for some reason. Try checking your transmition fluid to see where it is at. And while you are checking it, look at it to see if it is a funny color or if there is anything floating around in there, like metal shavings for instance.

whats up static...i had the same problems as you did. down shifting from 3-2 would grind even if you rev match or going slow (25mph) on third then going down to 2nd...it would grind. call it in and make sure you state that you want a toyota technician to test drive the car with you in it. trust me itll cut you down on the BS later. before you bring it in drive your car around for a bit and make sure your transmission is doing the grinds.

itll be all covered and expect a 2002 shift gate...:wtf:

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm tryin to figure something out as well. I need to get mine in, I have 45k miles........

my 5th gear had this problem from Tremec when I bought the car..
required new synchros and blockers..HOWEVER
i think you A. need to check your tranny fluid and
B. have your transmission blockers checkd for that gear...somethign just may be misaligned.
if it was your synchros it would grind at high rpm's first before during intermettent driving..
Lift must kill these cars like smoking does..slow and gradually..heh
