View Full Version : WRX and boost..how much hp??
Ran into a very nice looking 2001 WRX. He had mods done...not sure which ones...but, he had a boost guage in there.
Apparently under full boost it was hitting 2.4 bars, what does that equate to??
It seemed awefull high, but the guys did say it hit 2.4 bars at 4000rpm's. How much hp do you guys think he was running with that much boost? Better yet, how much boost would it have stock??

uh.... isnt that something like 38psi?
edit: 34.8 psi. That seems pretty high, but I sont know too much about the WRX engine

The WRX boost 14 pounds stock. 38 is kind of high. Even the new 911 Turbo doesnt boost that much.

well, he COULD be hitting 2.4 bar easily. The problem with that, is how long his engine can run at the amount of boost. Im running about 17-19 PSI under regular conditions with spikes of 21-23. I can run at like 40psi but my engine would blow very shortly.

From what I've read around the internet, 1.7 bar should be somewhere around 440bhp.

Ever since we picked up the WRX, I've been reading like mad over at i-club and ClubWRX about the potential tuning in the engine.
I have to say..that I'll soon be killing any serious modification plans for my Celica probably (after the NX kit..heh)...simply because of the amazing potential of the car. Freaking unbelievable.
The WRX is pretty damn amazing...the only weak link so far has been the tranny. It's supposedly not able to handle 300 plus worth of horsepower..which is a real shame....but from what I've read....that's kinda just hearsay at the moment, due to the fact that I've seen a guy post a good 298 at the f'ing wheels already with no ill effects.
As for a stock car pushing 2.4...that's a wee high. .1 bar (the stock WRX boost gauge) = 14.5 lbs of boost. 2.4...woah. :O

Right now...a stock WRX engine can handle about 18 pounds on that tiny ass turbo, but most users with an MBC are setting at 16 to 16.5. Get a Vishnu Stage 0 and staying with the 16 seems like the thing to do for a good dose of power.
From what I've seen and read...a stage 0 will let you hang (if briefly) with the super cars..heh...all that for 1,000 (plus install, unless YDIY) buckaroos. Which considering what you get when you spend 500 bucks on an exhaust and 200 on an intake for 20 horses...ain't a bad deal..heheh.
The guy must have had at least a stage 1 on his car or something..heheh.
I will have to double check that 2.4bars again... :)
I figured it sounded very high...but since I no little about turbo's and the WRX, I didnt want to argue about it!
Thanks for the info guys...

No prob man..I'm like totally new to this crap too..
I've just been reading the crap outta the tech portion of I-club.com
That forum by the way...is FUGGIN HUGE.
You could get lost in there...but as far as a repository of knowledge...maaaan....it's the shiznit.
www.clubwrx.net is strictly for the 02 WRX so it's better for that car... i-club is all Subarus.
(whoops..that's .net not .com)
