I brake all the time without putting the clutch in, if it is not jerking it isn't hurting the car.

it's okay to break while in gear. where the heck did you get the idea that it's bad?

You should have gotten made at him for not downshifting when he wanted to accelerate again. I don't like forcing my celi to accelerate in 4th gear at 1000 rpms. lol

I totally agree with Kit, Im wondering where you did get that idea that its bad to brake without having the clutch in. Hope you arent riding the clutch like mad dude, thats bad. But still, I wouldnt let no foo drive my car.

Sorry guys, but I'm a newbie, what happens if the car jerks?

braking without putting in the clutch is engine braking...its not bad for the car... the car jerks because the engine is trying to move the car, but its in too high a gear, and the car wont move... its hurting the engine.

hmm i guess i got wrong info then i used to break like that in my 300zx until my friend with a gsr said that it was bad i dunno how it was bad but i listened to him anyways and no i dont ride the clutch....

Basically... if you are braking in gear faster than your revs can drop naturally(i.e. neutral) it will hurt the car.
Because if you brake in gear faster than your revs drop naturally.. you are essentially forcing the engine to go down faster.
It's okay to brake with the car in gear, just don't force the engine to slow down.

In hazardous weather I would suggest breaking while in gear. Breaking in neutral in slick conditions can make for some hairy moments. Try it in the rain some time. Break while in gear then break in neutral.

Hey Maefyln... how do you ever manage to pull off those great times? Do you shift at 6800 rpms in all gears? What RPM do you launch at?
I recently went to the track and the best I could do was hit the top of 3rd before I trapped at 82 or something.

Oh.. what size tire you runnin? and at what PSi? Whats the elevation of your Raceway?

it's a good practice to brake in gear so u can use the engine to stop just in case. just like downshifting when climbing down hill so that u arent sitting on your brakes the whole time.

so basically if i am slowing down lets say in any gear i can just tap breaks lightly without pressing clutch all the way down? cuz like i said b4 i used to break like that in my 300zx but after my friend told me not to i believed him and so from then on everytime i had to break id push the clutch all the way in then slow down and when i had to accelerate again depnding on how much i slowed down id either shift down or stay in the same gear and gas it again.... so basically u guys are saying on the freeway when cars begin to slow down me tapping breaks a little without touching clutch wont hurt anything? but if i do what i am doing now which is fully engaging clutch (not riding it) but fully pressing down on it then breaking... this wont hurt anything either right?

Braking in any gear if it does not lug the engine will not hurt. Depressing the clutch and using your brakes will not hurt. Just get an automatic and be done with it. :)

If you are braking with the clutch completely released, then you are wearing out your brakes alot faster than if the engine were engaged to the transmission. My guess is you are probably changing your brakes every year or so?

Personally, when I want to slow down to a stop, I would let off on the gas, let the engine slow me down, using the brake if I have to. When I get to 1500RPMs or so, I would downshift to the next gear, and when the car is coming to a crawl, but before it starts to jerk, I'd throw the car from 2nd into neutral and brake to a complete stop.

LOL yeah dude, our gearbox is way different then what most peopel are used to. My friend jumped in mine once and took off and grinded, stalled, and did whatever. Didnt blowit though thank God. Never again!!! six-speeds are just so different then a 5.
