Sweet! Too bad you don't have a scale handy. ;) I'd love to see how much weight was saved by removing such a huge piece of glass, not to mention the wiper motor.

what u mean by painting ur window..didnt u just buy that piece of glass?

mnbvcxz
01-21-2006, 05:55 PM
no, it's plastic. and i had to paint the boarders because if i didn't, then you would be able to see the glue and gaskets...thats why your stock glass is painted black around the edges.

did you paint the inside or outside of the glass? any type of clear over it?

inside, because the glue won't stick to the plastic as is.
hotness... how much has it costed you so far?
300 for the hatch. 150 for the plastic. 10 bucks for paint cans. 40 for jig saw. 60 for angle grinder.
BTW, is the lexan reinforced for the hinges?
not sure what you mean...the hinges connect to the hatch...
Nice work.

thanks!

Beautiful. I wasn't going to buy a CF hatch because I figured my sub would rattle the hell out of it and the lexan glass would start to look like crap in a short time, but I want one now. Where did you find it for $300? I thought they were like $500.

Are you going to laminate it to protect the glass from scratching?

there has been mentioned a possiblity of the lexan cracking under the stress of repeated trunk closure...

same here - my 2 10w7's will most likely rattle everything even with the stock hatch let alone a CF version - I can't imagine what yours would do Eric

With enough power, your two 10's might outdo mine. I have a little over 7000 watts....4,500 watts going to my 18" sub. My whole car is going to flex when I turn this system up. I'm going to need some dynamat on the hatch. I would really like to see how well a CF hatch holds up to sound systems before I buy one.

You should clear coat the hatch and lexan (less prone to scratches then).

It won't need more than a couple cubic feet in a sealed box. It's nothing like size of the ported box an 18 SoloX needs.

I only have 1200 going to my components and 2000 to my subs... (recently installed a second set of JL XR650's in the rear) I also decided on a high-output alternator (180 amp) paired with my Optima yellow. how big is your alternator?

mnbvcxz

i got the scratch resistant polycarbonate. i tried to use just sand paper to sand the coating off(won't allow the glue to stick)and the sand paper didn't do anything but scuff it up A LITTLE! so thats why i bought the angle grinder and "sand blasting" disc's. the hatch already has a clear coat on it. not too worried about that being scratched. my friend has been with vis for a while. so he gave me a discount. i think regular price is like low 4 hundred's. as far as the window cracking... i highly doubt it. it's like 250 times stronger than glass. so unless you can blow out your stock glass, i wouldn't worry about this. with the extra pieces i had left over i tried to break it buy snapping it in two. it just bends. all the way. the returns to normal shape. i was jumping on it to try to get it to snap, and it just creased it.

Actually they will be too strong now. I will probably look for an old worn out set of shocks when I get a CF hatch.

Anyway, I'm very curious to know how much our stock hatch with stock glass weighs.

http://www.polyzone.com/asp/Product.asp?PG=2058 is were I got the plastic from. and I paid a guy to install the window, but I cut and prepped the window before installation. installation was 80 bucks. I didn't need glue and gaskets after all.

damn the prices went up....i got the 48" x 48"...thinkness, which i don't see on there anymore, i got .118", looks like you can only get .125" now...you don't have to go with the scratch resistant like i did...most people go with the non coated...http://www.polyzone.com/asp/Product.asp?PG=2065. it's a LOT cheaper

Nice. I figured it would shave a little more than 42lbs, but that's pretty good. Some people spend big money to go from a 20lb wheel to about a 10lb wheel. This would save the same amount of weight for less money.

scratch the idea with the tint. i went to 2 plaes and they both don't want to do it. one said it won't stick, the other siad that the heat gun will warp the plastic.

Where did you get the upgraded alternator from? That is something I have been wanting to do.

I assume it would help, i've noticed that when I do things like roll up/down windows with the headlights on .... the headlights dim. Would upgraded alternator help this?

I bought mine used from a member here. It is a Delco alternator wrapped by Ohio Generators....

They will wrap your stock alternator though. Yes, a HO alternator and a good capacitor will keep your lights from dimming. I'm no expert though. This would be a good question for the guys in the audio forum.

your comparison is not sound. wheels are unsprung weight and 10 lbs will affect performance greatly. 10 lbs weight savings will not give you noticeable gains (unless your in a go-kart)
