View Full Version : Short Distance Driving Bad for Battery?

I drive 1.9 miles to and from work, through about 2 street lights in 35 to 45 mph zones. The temp. gauge doesn't even get to the midpoint notch sometimes. If I do this for 6 months, will the engine speed provide sufficient energy for the alternator to recharge the battery or will the power slowly be sapped from the battery? And is it bad to not even reach optimum operating temperature? (Assuming I rarely go on longer distance trips, hypothetically speaking.)

I do that for almost 2 years now. No problems with battery dying whatsoever.

You'll be fine. The alternator provides 14.4v at idle.
Must be nice... I have a 150 mile round trip commute. It does depend a lil bit on other drains on your batt. like audio, alarm, etc. So long as your not putting any significant current draw on there it shouldn't be a problem where your running it on a daily basis.
