View Full Version : I need some help with a new car decision

Now I know this is a repeat of my earlier post but only two people responded to it I thought I'd give it a better title
I bought a 01 Celica GT a few months back and thought it was awsome when I got it, but now that the newness has worn off I'm considering getting a different. It all hit me one day when I raced my friend (who I raced a few times) but he has always been afraid of his bad brakes and bald tires so he never fully "unleashed the beast" on me. He has got a 01 Eclipse GT (stock) and the other day he went all out on our raced and totally stomped me. After that I was scarred so I've decided to get rid of the Celica and get something else. I was considering a RSX Type-S because I kinda like those, but today I came upon a MR2 Spyder for 14000 and I wanted to know how those were. I dont want to end up having to do a ridiculous amount of **** to my car, because I wont be able to afford stuff like that for a while but there are alot of things I plan on doing to any car I get. So my question is are MR2s crappy without an engine swap and turbo and this and that, or are they a good car that can hold its own even being stock?

Stock for stock, the MR2 should be able to keep up with the Eclipse (if the Eclipse is a manual). It'll hand the Eclipse its ass in handling and braking, too. If you don't mind having minimal cargo area, go for it.

id take the rsx-x over the mr2

um. The engine in the celica gt is the same as the engine mr-s .. I don't think the older bodies came as an mr2 spyder so i'm guessing your talking about the newer ones. the mr-s is lighter then the celica so it should be faster but probably not by much, if your only talking about straight line speed. I believe the type-s will suit you better as far as stock vs stock goes. type-s does well with mods as well. you can stay na and have a pretty fast car. unlike the mr-s where a swap or turbo is a must.

Just remember that there is always someone faster. Buying a new car will not fix that. If you want a new car because you're not happy with your car, then do it. If you want a new car because you lost a race in your current one...well...yeah, kinda self explanatory. I'd go with an mr2 over an rsx type s if I were you as long as you don't live in a really snowy area or anything.

Personally I'd take the rsx type s but as 'fourwallsdrums' said someone is always gonna be faster, so first you'll have to accept that. hope when you buy the mr-s or the type s you don't get mad when a cobra whips your a$$ and you'll want a new car again. another option would be to just save the cash you'd use when you'd go buy a different car and turbo your 1zz.
MR-2 Spyder is a KICKASS car, I wouldn't hesitate to get one if I had the cash lying around.
Of course, if all you want is straight line speed, why are you wasting money on gutless, 4 cylinder FWD econoboxes? (RSX is basically a Civic underneath)
If all you care about is going fast in a straight line, spend $8,500 on a Camaro Z28 with an LS1, spend $3000 on a head/cam package and another $1500 on intake/exhaust/headers - you will be making 400 whp at least. The car runs low 13s/high 12s stock and will easily be in the 11s by that point.

wow
you're misguided
SRT-4 is on the bottom end of the spectrum of cars that can be considered fast.
why?
FWD, and 4 cylinders . . . go figure!

Yes but you can get one new from the dealership for pretty cheap, and it'll be faster than most other sport compacts. Not everyone's a car mechanic. I mean if the guy really wanted to do a bunch of work on a car, he could always turbo his GT.
For what this guy is looking for the SRT-4 is definitely an option. I mean come on, a Z28 with a large amount of engine work isn't an "entry level" vehicle by any means.
I personally don't care for them, my GT-S is fast enough for me.

I dont like domestic cars so those are out of the question. Right now I think I'm leaning towards the MR2. There are no type-s rsx's at the dealers where I live so I'm going to find one to test drive it to see how I like it.

What is wrong with your Celica GT? I drove one for several weeks, and it's a great daily driver. It's quick, it will outbrake/outhandle the Eclipse, and for a bit of $$ in mods, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting it fast enough to beat an Eclipse, too. It's also really good on gas. You can't say that about any of the other cars mentioned in this thread, except possibly the MR2. Don't waste your money on getting a new car unless you plan on moving upto something that can atleast pull a high 13 second pass in stock form. There are plenty of imports that can pull it off, some of them may be out of your price range, but you can drive the Celica a bit until you save up enough $$ to buy something worth upgrading to.
EDIT... or you can just buy a scooby and put a couple of $$ in mods and be pretty well off. There are other cars out there.

Nothing is wrong with my GT, but just like B.B. King said "The thrill is gone" I went from a 96 ford contour with 150,000 miles to the Celica so yeah it seemed fast at the time. It just dosnt tickle me in the same way anymore.
EDIT: I know there are other cars out there those were just in my price range, I couldn't think of many other ones that I like, I havn't found a wrx in my range yet

Why should it matter if you got beat by an eclipse. Your car will out last it.. Celica is an excellent car.. Its reliable and fun to drive. Now if you cant find a used WRX in your price range just keep the celica. if you want thrill do some suspension work.

if you trade your car in for a mr2 i consider that the dumbest thing ever. i would just save up some cash and turbo the celica. the mr2 is only gonna be a hair faster than the celica. id rather go for the type s for trade in.

with a street driven S3 car on the edge of 10's they are far from the bottom end...

A Z28 stock is still faster than a Stage III SRT-4.

That is the most retarded comment I have ever seen posted on a car forum.
99.9% of you are so so misinformed it is painful. Stage 3 is capable of 10's. Stock Z28 is no where near that. Not in the ballpark, parking lot, or the same city as that.
here is a Stage 3R SRT-4 running a 3 10 second passes.

They have been out forever and a Day that's why they have been in the 10's for so long.
The SRT has been out for just a couple years now, and is already out of production (until the next one that is).

you said your price range was around the rsx or mr2-s price range. now you're talking about sti and evo8, that's a huge price gap.

yeah, I dont like it. Once the SRT team gets their hands on it (sure they have already) it will look alot better trust me, and it is suppose to have 300HP. SO it will be yet another Best bang for your buck and then some car.
I will however be switching from 4 to 8 cylinders and picking up the new SRT-8 Challenger with the bored 6.4L Hemi and throwing a blower on it.
