engine blew up, maybe parting out celica

The engine on my 2001 GT-S 6 spd (Spectra Blue) expired yesterday at 91,126 miles. The dealer wants to replace the entire short block for $6165 + tax. $2465 in parts, 35 hours labor.

I was thinking of parting out the car instead. I have not made a final decision yet, but I wanted to see how much interest there would be from people who wanted parts. So if you are interested, leave a post. I will make my decision within the next week.

Don't know exactly, the car was driven hard though. Isn't that why we all bought the GT-S in the first place? Easily the funnest car I have owned.

It was never mis-shifted, although from 2 weeks after I got it, untill about 58,000 miles it was in and out of the shop for warrenty repairs: Snapped lift bolts, cracked cam rocker arm, multiple failed syncros in tranny, cat failure, TPS sensor failure, stalling at idle. All of that was warrenty work, free of charge to me.

The only things I have paid to fix (which I fixed myself), was a new alternator a few months ago. After calling a dozen places, I found one for only $180 at a local auto parts store.

Other repairs: I have had 3 jackasses back into my car in 5 years (the most recent was just last month). Been in the body shop a few times for that BS, never know it from looking at the car though, looks nice and clean though.

I have also had two broken windsheilds from flying debris on the highways.

The most amazing thing is I still have the original stock brake rotors & pads on the car, they hardly look warn at all. Still work great too.

I didn`t really call TOYOTA yet but i heard from some friends that will cost me around $400 :) Anyway if you are interested to sell, let me know the price, i don`t know how is the shipping gonna be :( I had the same problem like u just yesterday, some debris flew and cracked my windshield on the highway, it looks like small spider now.

The second time my windsheild was cracked, I called a few different places for price quotes. I think I spent just under $300 to get a brand new one installed. They came out to my work one day and installed it while I was inside working, didn't even have to take my car anywhere, which was nice.

They are just under a year old, everything should be intact, never been cracked open.

Oil was just changed a month ago, still full. Mobile 1 synthetic, changed regularly, oil light has never came on.
Also, after talking to a good family freind who is a lead engineer for a major car company (including used to work for Toyota back in the Supra days), he mentioned that the short block should not fail unless it was run without oil (which it wasn't), or it over heated, which did happen once about 11 months ago, I shut the car off as soon as I saw that the temp needle was blinking, had it towed back to the mechanic. He said it could have taken this long to actually break from overheating. I had almost forgotten about it.

Smaay is a member that lives in Lancaster and has a fair amount of experience with 2ZZ engines. He works on cars for folks for way less than the dealers charge - you should contact him.

Also, you can get a used motor for less than the dealer is asking. I think Smaay can also get the shortblock cheaper than that.

Oh - another thing - 35 hours to shortblock a 2ZZ is BS - it takes like 20 tops unless you are a moron. I could probably do it in 12. The Toyota Shortblock comes FULLY assembled and with bearings and everything already ready to go.

Was there anything else they were doing to it besides just install a shortblock?
