Upgrading the stock amp isn't as easy as just swapping out he old for a new one. It is a special amp made for toyota that has 8 channels and comes in a pretty small package. A single aftermarket amp with 8 channels is going to be 2-3 times that size and at least that much better in sound quality. It will not fit in the stock location. Most people relace the front 6 channels with 2 pair of components and the rear with full range speakers powered through a 4 channel amp. (you technically lose one speaker on the doors, but the sound quality is much better) Then they use an additional amp to power a sub woofer.

Most have been saying that they see more improvement replacing the amp and running new wires to the stock speakers thatn the other way around.

I would tend to agree.... Even though my system is now stock....and i do plan on upgrading the audio....I dont plan on changing the speakers... I think the ones that come with the car are quite good. I think adding an amp, sub and headunit will really make 'em sing.

Yup, I'd start by adding an amp first. I kept the stock speakers and they sound much better with more quality watts.

I would replace the stock amp entirely. A good 4 channel amp will do nicely. The front speakers will need to be wired in parallel for the right and left channels since there are two speaker leads coming from each door. (to wire speakers in parallel just connect positive to positive and negative to negative). Just make sure that the amp you get can handle 2 ohm loads and you will be fine.

you can fit a new amp in the same space as the stock one. i put my pioneer amp in the same spot with no probs.
