Hmm....i think that although it works well in the Ferrari, it might stand out a little too much in a mid-price car like the Celica and almost tacky. Also, the L on the left side would be on the bottom of the 2nd gear, since that's where the R is for the 6 speed. I don't know much about manuals (since I don't drive one), but if everyone's already complaining about how fast one needs to shift to stay in 2nd cam, wouldn't such a defined shiftgate be more of an obstacle than it's worth? Still, nice photoshop...
yup, hwat he said... only reason a ferrari can have that is that even if you shift slow..you'll still be going pretty fast..

Might help some people with the misshiftin :P
IMHO it doesn't look that dope....i've always liked the leather boot over the bootless look that ferraris have :P
I think that it would work with the misshifts. I don't plan in doing it myself, I'm actually going with a whole different jdm look with an all black interior with red stitching. I'll have picks up shortly.

shift boots actually keep us safer. Think of what would have happen if you dropped something in there.

probably nothing would happen if you dropped something in there.. if you've taken apart a shifter (to install a short shifter, or otherwise) you can see that there's nothing really there that can get messed up.. just a few bars and joints.. that i doubt a soda would damage.

me and sam(the anti-rice) were gonna do this a while back, but it was really really hard to get a template made, plus finding a mounting bracket.... in the end we gave up because through trial and error it ended up being a square with no teeth..

Not sure how its ricey....
It could help some lesser experienced drivers be sure of the gear they are in (ie avoid misshifts), it is a stock item on some cars (unlike neons and stickers ... a la rice), and you could attach a black cover (much like a boot) UNDER the template to prevent anything from getting damaged.
At least in my opinion, a "rice" mod is one with no useful purpose and looks STUPID (which is a matter of taste I guess).
If it were made using the right materials (NOT plastic, but a good quality brushed or chromed metal), I would probably buy one.
just my 2 cents!

It would take some VERY careful measuring to work....
And a totally different set of specs for the '02 shiftgate.

It seems I remember someone trying to do this a long time ago and there was no way to do it. It was just a big oval instead of defined shift gates like that.

Yep. In reality, this mod would be impossible. You would have to raise the gate up about 3 inches to do that.
I chop out of imagination sometimes :D

Check out the MR2 shifter.

Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT) lets you change gear without having to declutch. This race track technology leaves the driver free to concentrate on acceleration, braking and achieving the optimum driving line, whilst cornering or overtaking. SMT goes a long way towards increasing the enjoyment and safety of the MR2 sports car experience.
SMT applies the clutch automatically using a hydraulic actuator and an electronic throttle is also used to select the correct engine speed for the change, whilst sensors and an electronic control unit manage the gearbox.
The driver just has a functional chrome gear-stick that is pushed backwards for a higher gear and pushed forward for a lower one. This shift direction takes account of the natural body position during acceleration and deceleration.
With the optional shift buttons mounted on the steering wheel, you can change gears just as a Formula One driver does, keeping both hands on the wheel to react to any eventuality.
The MR2 equipped with the SMT is also city-proven: The SMT system will automatically return to 1st gear while stopped with the engine running. This ensures a quick getaway from traffic lights.

Just a thought, but no one said that this couldn't have a shift boot over it. I think its a great idea. Why would it hurt to have that type of shift gate to prevent mis-shifts and then put a standard boot back over it?

Rather the gate being straight up and down, would it make sense to angle it slightly, such that it was easier to shift up rather than down? If one was really serious about preventing misshifting, would angling the throw (not sure which direction) make it harder to go from high to too low?
Good point on the MR2 shifter (pretty cool). Interesting that they've angled it's throw.

The whole idea of the gate preventing mishifting would be the ability to se what gear you are in literally. There is no problem with the shifter going into gear, it's the human abilty to concentrate enough to get it in there at high speeds.

i like it... if anyone starts to learn m/t.... visually would be good to see where ur at. if u can get a detachable shift boot then it would make everyone happy...... and then u can get different shift boot colors like cell fones.... then u can get ones that light up too just like cell fones..... and if u can dial from ur shifter, then u'd really have a cell fone..... im sorry... i got carried away.... but seriously tho.... its a good idea...... me like

If you just want a visual indication of what gear you're in, try using a piece of tape on the edges of the shifter bezel so that the shift lever lines up with each line when it's in the corresponding gear. It wouldn't be pretty, but it'd work....
