Technical Notes
This is the first year for the seventh generation Celica. The specifications here are for the GT-S, the hotter of the two models. The all-new automatic transmission is available with a manual shift mode operated by buttons on the steering wheel. The engine in both models has Toyota's familiar VVTi that uses oil pressure and a helically grooved piston to change the timing of the intake camshaft. The direct ignition system has four coils that include the igniters (switching transistors) in each coil body assembly. Each igniter also sends a confirmation signal to the ECM, informing it that the coil has successfully fired. Inside the cylinder head, valve actuation is different on each engine and so is valve adjustment. On the 1ZZ-FE engine in the base car, the cam lobes ride directly on the lifters. Valves are adjusted by measuring the clearance, removing the camshafts and installing different thickness lifters. On the 2ZZ-GE engine, the cam lobes ride against rocker arms and the adjustment shims sit directly on top of the valve stem. With the special service tools, the shims can be easily removed without removing the cams or rockers. When troubleshooting electrical problems, make sure a wiring diagram is at hand. The seats have airbags in the side bolsters.
