1.)Hey guys, just wondering about deck designs. Whats the difference between an open deck and a closed deck, and why is one or the other not good for forced induction. What kind of cars have open/closed decks, what is the deck exactly? Are there any other designs besides open and closed?
Basically I hear alot about deck designs but have no idea what they are referring to or the pros/cons. thanks.
2.)Secondly, what is a returnless fuel system? I hear on the new mustangs they have a returnless fuel line system which forces them to convert back to a returning fuel system(?) What exactly does this mean? Why is one better than the other?
3.) MPFI = Multi port fuel injection
EFI = ???

1.) Closed deck: the top of the engine block looks like a piece of metal with holes for the cylinders, and small coolant passages.
Open Deck: The top of the block looks like a outer frame (the walls of the engine) with round cylinders sticking up. It does NOT look like a piece of metal with cylinder holes drilled in it; instead, it looks like thick cans were shoved down into a big hole in the block. Below is a picture of the 2ZZGE engine block. It is an OPEN block.

Note the gap between the cylinder wall and the wall of the entire block. There is no such gap on a closed deck engine.

2.) A returnless fuel system does not send unused fule back to the gas tank. It just keeps a pressurized fuel header and draws fuel as needed.
A return line system cycles fuel not used by the injectors back to the tank. This system allows for NOS systems to use the return header to supply the extra fuel needed for the NO2 injection.
I'm not really sure what other advantages there are to return systems, but the returnless system has lower emissions due to evaporative losses.
3.) EFI= Electronic Fuel Injection. Old term, but still applicable. A MPFI system is a type of EFI, as are the older Throttlebody systems of the 80s. The TPI (Tuned Port Injection) systems of 80s Camaros and Corvettes are another variation on the theme.

wow! thanks alot for the input. Ive always heard these terms but never knew what they meant. Now one more question, what are the pros/cons of open deck vs. closed deck?

Open deck: Cheaper to manufacture, better cooling characteristics.
Closed Deck: More power potential because of better seating of the head gasket, especially under high compression or boost. Less flex in the block, also contributing to capabilities at high power levels, and better sealing.
For anything you'll realistically do with a Celica, you won't be limited by the open deck. Lot's of Hondas make huge power using their open deck engines (almost all of them, i think...)
