in first or second if i get up past 4 grand or a little higher but don't shift and let off the gas and let the revs just go down i get a grinding or rubbing noise from the engine compartment. Im thinking its my cai rubbing against something but im not sure. Anybody else get this. Try it out if you have a cai and see what happens.

I know exactly what you are talkin about. When you let go of the gas it sounds like maybe the plastic covers under your car are rubbing agaisnt the tires or sumthing. I get that but with no intake. stock airbox. It also happens in every gear, but the higher the gear the less noise it makes. I changed to synthetic oil and the noise was almost gone, however its back now, I havent gotten an oil change for almost 4000 miles. I don't think it has anything to do with your intake rubbing.

mine doest do it pass 2nd. and don't slack on the oil changes. that can make the difference in your celica running forever or living a shorten life. oil=car blood

Got the same thing here... and it's exactly like Gay RD described it...kinda like plastic rubbing. I get it in first and 2nd, but I never really listened for it in the other gears. Anyone know what it is?
Oh and no intake here... stock except for TRD springs (and the sound was there before the springs)

When you let off the gas? Yeah, mine does that too, as did my old 94 Celica. Always used Mobil 1 Synthetic, and change my oil religiously. I've just about decided it's just the noise Toyota trannys make. Anyone who knows better, please enlighten me. I've always wondered this :werd:

Mine does it as well....1 - 3rd gear. It annoys the hell out of me more than any other noise the car makes

I know the sound you're referring to. I'm completely stock. The only time I've heard a similar noise in a car was in my 1980 Celica and that was worn bearings in the transmission. I can't believe that would be it, but it sounds exactly the same... and it wasn't there when I bought the car. [2000 GT-S 32,000 mi.]
Maybe this is the same noise I have...mine almost reminds me of a rattling noise. Only in first or 2nd gear when I let of the gas...around 1,500 RPMS in first gear. Is the same noise everyone has?

Mine does it too!!! 4000rpm sounds like some plastic vibrating.

Mine does it too....it sometimes goes away and then comes back.
under 30mph the noise slowly disappears...........1-3 gear it happens, once in a while it happens in 4 and 5th, but a very slight noise........just like gay rd says.
Anyone know wtf it is?

Get the Kazuma exhuast and you won't here it anymore. I don't even know if my car does that or not. I don't hear it though.

Haha, that's like what I was told with a bad wheel bearing 2 cars ago(91 Eclipse). "Get a bigger amp, the stereo will drown out the sound" :gap: Seriously though, not a bad idea. I need an exhaust on mine.

I get that sound too! But every so often it goes away. Do you all get a jerky feeling when you let go of the gas too?
Someone take it to their dealer to take a look and let us all know. It looks like a lot of us have this.

Remains to be seen if this is actually a problem, which I doubt if we're all getting it. I'm taking my car in on monday to check out my synchros. I'll make the tech listen to it and see what he says.

maybe it's the BELT TENSIONER
you're supposed to hear a rough rubbing or if it's wet/humid rock tumbler/squealing noise when you decelerate according to toyota, and i've noticed that in my auto GTS...i run it to redline and let off keeping it in gear, and i hear that rough noise from the engine bay area. i also hear a bunch of weird squeaks/rattles from the interior cabin, my A pillar squeaks, and my rear hatch window too sometimes, so it's suddenly like i'm flooded with a bunch of weird noises :)

Na, definitely not that. More like a rattle-rubbing sound. I always
thought it was the clutch.

Yeah.. I've already had my belt tensioner replaced and nothing has changed.
I did hear one of the service people saying something about a timing chain. Does the Celica have one?
