View Full Version : Acquiring the GT-S 6-speed... is this guy putting me on?

Hi, new here.

I'm considering purchasing the 2002 GT-S 6-speed. However, a salesman at a local dealer told me that they have a hard time getting their hands on the GT-S 6-speed, and that Toyota is only putting out like 5000 of them. He said he'd be surprised if I could find one on a lot in the area.

This sounds really fishy to me.... I have read several reviews of the Celica, and none of them mentioned this limited production. Furthermore, the "true market value" of the car given by Edmunds.com does not indicate that supplies are limited, and the TMV takes into account supply and demand (their TMV for the GT-S 6-spd is less than the MSRP).

Is this guy putting me on, thinking I'll pay more because I will think they're rare?? I can't believe he'd be that stupid, since he knows I'm comparison shopping.

Any info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I think you are being put on. There may be a limit to the number with the exact configuration you want. I shopped at 6 different dealers and all of them except one told me I couldn't get a GT with the action package. One said they could order whatever I wanted. I "ordered" with this dealership. After 6 months I got my car, but it wasn't *exactly* what I ordered but it was very close.

Check out the "build your own" section of toyota. What is listed there is what you can get.

Yeah, I don't trust them, which is why I'm researching this. I just can't believe he'd be stupid enough to tell me that, if the next dealer I call is going to prove him a total liar. I made it clear I was comparison shopping.

munckee, did you end up finding one in StL?

Is it possible the supply has dwindled since most of you found yours, and while it wasn't hard to find one a few months ago, it is now for some reason? I didn't ask for any specific option packages or anything.

This is just really weird... I suppose I'll just need to talk to other dealers and see if they say the same thing. And mwz26, that icon is friggin' hilarious. ;)

:werd: dont trust salesmen, they dont know their a$$ from a hole in the wall sometimes.....I mean there have been salesmen telling people "wait till you feel the supercharger kit on this car" referring to the celica.......salesmen saying that the Supra has a V6........and $hit like that......just ask your questions here and you'll be better off.....

When I went to the dealer, I told them that I wanted a 6 speed GTS. They checked on the computer and found several 6 speed all over Southern California. My car wasn't on the lot and they had to drive it to the dealership cuz it came from the factory. Don't trust this dealer. Just go to another dealer who is willing to do extra work just to get you a car. I'm pretty sure there's 6 speed somewhere near you.

Thanks, I just found another dealer about a mile from me with two in stock!

Either that guy really didn't know what he was talking about, or he made a really lame attempt at tricking me. Probably both.

Oh, and I have a question before I take the time to go for a test drive..... Will my 6'5" boyfriend even fit in this car?? Both in terms of riding and (if he's really, really nice) driving.

Thanks!

Yes. I'm 6'5" and I find it rather roomy, in both the driver and passenger seats. Just don't expect more than one person to fit in the back seat, they'll have to stretch across :wiggle:

Brian00GTS is right about the back seat. If you have claustrophobia(spelling?) don't go back there.
