I've never drove a 6-speed before, only a 5-speed. Seeing that the R gear is replaced by gear 6 and moved in a 6-speed transmission, how the heck do you find that 5 and 6 gear?
This is how I do it for a 5-speed. What I usually do is tap the stick all the way to the left and shift up or down for gears 1 and 2. For gears 3 and 4, I leave the stick neutral and then shift up or down . Tap all the way to the right and shift up for gear 5.

So there's something that locks you out from going into R gear?:wtf:
Oh, I was talking about a standard US 6-speed transmission too.

Reverse is all the way over to the left on a six speed, its nowhere near 6th.

maybe in Celi's, but I believe (note: Believe, it's been 2 years) on my friend Z28 when I drove it, it is on the far right. but you have to push hard to accidently hit R, and it locks out anyway over like, 3 mph...you can still hit it, but it's tough.
I believe it's on the right in his Z, but again, cant remember....but yea, on the GT-S, Reverse is on the far left, so dont worry about shifting to 6th and hitting R ;)

What?! This is insane. After all these months, I've been believing that the R gear was located on the far right!
So is there still actually a lockout for the R gear if you're up to some speed? Would sure hate shifting into R accidently.

well, not really. there are a number of cars out there that have the Reverse gear in the upper left (normally where 1st gear is) as well.
And yes, the 'gates' won't open if you're driving and you need to shift into first gear. You have to be at a stop to engage the reverse gear.

ya under normal circumstances (IE nothing on the car or tranny broken) can't get into R if you are rolling forward at all.

So is there still actually a lockout for the R gear if you're up to some speed? Would sure hate shifting into R accidently. The gear itself is the lockout. It's not synchronized, so the chances of getting into reverse is almost non existant. It's sometimes hard to engage even when the car's at a standstill (common with all non-synchronized reverse gears). Besides, when you shift, you can feel the lever stop between the 1/2 gates. Then you'll need to push further to get past the extra resistance into the reverse gate. Unless you're trying to ram the shifter through the window, you'll feel this difference and know when to move the lever forward for 1st.

some cars have different reverse slots. the car you're probably thinking with the reverse on the far right to the bottom is probably a TT Supra.
