I've been to Hawaii roughly 8 times, but haven't been in quite a few years. And now I'm moving to the Hilo area in four months for school.

I'm shipping the car over there so I can squeak out the last few years it has left in it and then hope it doesn't follow me back to the mainland if I choose to go back or depending on what job I get after I'm done with school. I'm just wondering what the effects, if any, the environment has on the car? My dad had some concern about the salt having an effect on the engine bay and paint, but I figure as long as I'm not parking 15ft away from the ocean all day every day, I'm kosher. I know it rains a LOT over there, but that doesn't bother me. I love heavy rain.

The thing has turned into a beater anyway so I'm not really all that concerned with it. Just as long as it stays relatively mechanically sound. It'll pass the safety inspection without a problem. It's still decent, I've just given up trying to fix what gets broken as people continue to break into my car when there's nothing to take in the first place.

Also, "no fault" insurance, is that the same as liability? I'm going to downgrade to the bare minimum for insurance as well just because the car is almost at the point where $1k/year for insurance just isn't worth the $5k payout I'll get if I'm lucky. I'm going to call an agent when it's time, but just want to know so I can make my timeline of getting everything ready.

TIA :D

as long as you dont live near the ocean your paint should be okay. nonetheless a covered garage helps a lot. I dont think anyone in here is from Hilo.
and i dont know much about how the insurance works - just that if its your fault your premium goes way up.
