View Full Version : NYc to Boston run (idea)

recently the gumball 3000 race and the NYc to florida run had me thinking.. why not do a local short run?
i think the reason behind the long runs is to have a lot factors, prolong the race, and lessen the factor of speed. so if we were to hold a local short race, it'll be all about speed. which is not a very brite idea, but it should be fun.
the thought that scares me is the idea of 10+ cars screaming down the highway.. some do-gooder citizen makes a phone call and state police will be waiting a few miles down to take people to jail, take their license or least bit a citation.
i figure if everyone chips in an entry fee, the $pool should be incentive for people to participate. maybe even a sponsorship.. i dont think a mod shop would mind handing out some money if all these cars are displaying their logo.

so just for the sake of a conversation, let's discuss such a run, from NYc say to Boston. what do you guys think about the idea and the factor related to it ?

doosh...stop smoking whatever you're smoking.......:)

a race like that depends not on the car, but on the person's nerve...if he can take driving his car at 140mph for 3 hours.

I'd almost consider it...hehe...but I could not afford the consequences of being caught....so....and I doubt anyone could.

haha, exactly what hanwei said. also, my tires suck ass and my shocks are gone so my ride barely sticks and bounces around a lot, i wouldn't make it at high speeds on a highway. :(

how about we have everyone pitch in like $45-$50 and rent a track or go to one that has low turnout, and use the extra money to buy prizes for fastest one there. maybe even split it up by GTS, GT, etc.

i dont see what the flaming would be for. i did say "for the sake of a conversation". unless you're incapable of having one of those?

the thing with a track is the cost & the official procedures.. bmw club did a free-practice at lime rock last year. it cost over $200 to enter and it was 1 person on the track at a time. so a small turn out would mean more time on the track but more money per person. i think $200 was split amongst 50.. so go figure.

find a road course and i'm all with you. but then it'll be all official and you have to meet the numbers to make it happen. mite as well do an autox weekend.

the thing with the run is that it will be at your own discretion. it's not really a race. if you choose to drive insanely fast, you may pay the consequences. i mean if a family member was deathly ill (or whatever case you can think of) you wouldnt necessarily gun it at 140mph to reach their house.

it's probably why they do long runs.. so people will have to rest / eat and what not. then speed is less of a factor. but i've seen a video of gumball 3000 where this 911 goes over 160mph.

as far as sponsorship.. i gather all these stores make money off people who want to either look fast or go fast. i dont see any of them carry any morals, i.e. against street racing or what have you. i'm sure it has happened to you where you are just minding your business.. traveling 'fast' thru the traffic and someone tags along. that is the reason people put TRD or any other stickers on their cars. to show off (or pretend). fast cars attract attention and people see the stickers. anywho.. this is an argument i should be selling to the sponsors really.

PS> i smoke winston s2 sometimes.. they make me lite headed. but i wasnt under the influence. hehe.

does anyone know what my goal is here? i was thinking out loud i suppose.. i was thinking about such a race.. what would make it happen. what the factors are. what kind of people would join. that sort of thing. it's purely hypothetical.

actually, i like the idea. But i think that some roads have to be banned to make it more interesting. or make the race start an hour b4 rush hour. Destination is a house party in the destination city.

Hell, if u wanta destination, try Rutland, Vt. I expect to be back up there in early July.

thats a good 5+ hours from NYC, adn probably 3+ from Baahhhston.

Excellent drives if teh weather is clear.

ya. there have to be multiple routes. maybe even a scavenger hunt; perhaps pick some points of interest that people have to take a picture of. i dont know if banning would be enough, because it'll be on an honor system unless each car is monitored on a GPS unit. the rush hour idea sounds good. that forces people to use mostly back roads.

also a trip to vermont sounds excellent. lots of scenic roads. mmm.. i mite do this by myself and win ALL the money. mooo hahaha.

um...that's called a traditional rally :) except they don't do it on many public roads, and the object (like bracket racing) is to arrive on a set time. i forgot the specifics, but it sounded interesting.

also yeah, i guess a road course would be a lot of work. how about we just do it every other week at a drag strip? just hang out, and do a few 1/4 runs and some testing/tuning. group it up by people there (more than 1 person in a GTS = GTS category, etc.), winner of each (GTS, GTS Auto, GT, GT Auto, depending on if any owners of those cars show up) gets equal share of all the money donated in. so if tracks are $20 to run, everyone gave $45, that's $25...if we had like 20 people, that's $500, split 4 ways, is slightly over $100 per winner (maybe more depending on if nobody in a GT or no auto shows up)...every 2 weeks or a month.

run what you brung. seperate category for nitrous/FI peeps :) sure people would start stripping their cars and whatnot, but then you'd have people breaking 1/4 mile records left and right for celicas.

Nah. Long distance is more interesting. We should plan several states and destination that we need to visit.

The car and its occupants need to be photographed in front of a certain monument.

Figure 2 people per car. At least one will have the digicam. Figure we can hit at least NY, NJ, Pa, Ct, Ma, Vt, and RI, Me and/or NH in a day or so.

yeah i dont think the point here was just to win money. that was just the incentive.

the catch is in order to have people involved, they have to be friends, or it has to be a lot of fun, or clever, or money involved. me thinks.
