View Full Version : Optimal wheel weight?

I may be speaking out of my arse, correct me so I don't make the same mistake again.
I was thinking, light weight wheels are good for speed and all, but what if I'm looking for performance on turning as well? Heavier wheel should offer more friction b/t tires and the road, right? Or is it simply an effect so small it might as be neglected? Thanks.

the effect of the wheel weight on traction is negligible compared to the weight of the car.
Optimal wheel weight is zero...let me know when you find one. :gap:

a heavy wheel is also bad because it's unsprung weight. Think about taking a turn and hitting a bump...a heavy wheel will not return to the pavement as quickly as a light wheel, given the same springs/shocks.

but hitting a bump with a light wheel can also fvck up the wheel alot more than a heavier wheel. I know there are some strong lightweight wheels out there, but its still something to take into consideration. i think another thing that should be takin into account is that wheels do in fact flex a bit when loading hard, so something with a decent weight is good. Lightweight also magnifies any problem with the wheel. You will notice right away if they aren't balanced. I would say that you should stay with a 17 that weighs under 20 lbs, and you should be fine. If you are an all out racer, you can get the ssr competitions for like 380 a pop, 17 x 8 that weighs a little over 13 lbs. Hope that helps.

If you're an all out racer in a Celica, the last thing you need is a freakin' 17x8 wheel, even if it is only 13 lbs. Same construction, I'm sure a 15x7 would be lighter without sacrificing anything in performance. Slap a 225/45R15 Hoosier on there and go! :burnout:

you are absolutely right. I just dont think that everyone here is an all out racer. I just think 17's are nice for the street. Thats why I am gonna get K1's in a 15, and throw the 225/45's on that beeeeatch for track days :)
