hey guys, this is real newbie-ish, but how would you know if your VVTL-i engine is faulty...?

Can you tell by the sound of the engine when popping open the hood when its on? Sorry, but I'm real paranoid...

If it goes "POP" "BAM" or "POW" really loud, you got a problem. If instead of it going Tooooooyooooooootaaaaaaa during shifting, instead goes Hoonnnnnnnnndddaaaaaaaaaa...then you got a major prob and take that thing back quick!

I had that exact problem with my car when shifting. I hear its a common problem, so they fixed it under warranty. Had to do with the synchromesh or something.
