View Full Version : Bypass factory amp or not?

Although it sounds like a pain in the ass to deal with and more trouble than its worth, I'm gonna get an aftermarket HU for the celica.

Ive got the premium stereo, so I've got the amp in the glove box.

The HU I want to get is the alpine 9855 - which has all sorts of nice features, including one that delays the audio properly to land directly on the drivers ears at the right time.

Ive read all about it, and know the TA-03 harness needs to be modified to connect to the amp. I'm not trying to be super loud, so I'm sure the onboard amp of the alpine is adequate.

Above all, I want to be able to use the full features of the HU. Is routing it through the amp going to prevent me from using any such features? Is it easier to just bypass it altogether, or harder? What do I gain/lose by going with or without the amp...just sound level, or is the factory amp EQing the sound etc?

all i know is the Scotche TA-03 harness is not your only option..you can also get this one, which i have and liked much better because you don't have to do the mod to get rid of the alternator noise (buzzing sound)..

that's the one i have..that way you can utilize your stock amp..

If that is all you need, why are people still talking about the scosche box?

Most don't use the box... just the harness.

if you care about sound, i recommend a complete system, amp, speakers, etc...right now i've an aftermarket radio w/stock amp and speakers. believe me, it's very dull and unlively...

So...if this harness from CC is all you need, is the scosche TA-03 and the needed resistor mod therefore obsolete?

i have never tried the harness from CC, i do have scosche in the car...actually, i also made like 2 others for the heck of it.

not sure if the one from CC would work...get it and try it out, if not, take it back to them for refund...

You may still need to mod the CC version.... depending on voltage output of the new HU... the CC version appears to be similar to the Scosche harness after the resistor mod.. but that mod is tailored to the HU output... you'd have to figure out what the resistor network is in the CC harness... it may just be a knock-off of the Scosche and you'll have to add resistors...

I got that harness today, but it plain and simply does not plug into the factory wiring that I pulled out of the back of the stock radio. It has the little vertical tabs blocking it, and its just plain not big enough to wrap around the stock connectors....wtf?

I took a pic of the harness with the connector...where does this plug in? It doesnt look anything like that pics of the TA-03 that I've seen on the web...I'd imagine the connector itself would have to be nearly identical.

your photo doesn't work, dead link...

if you have 2 wiriing harness for the chasis, you've the standard 87+ toyota radio wiring...

The photo works...you just have to copy and paste the link into your browser as I said.

I'm positive its a GTS, and I can see the amp behind the glovebox.

The stock radio has a single large input for wiring (not the two small like ive seen for the GT), and a second input for the cd changer. I'll take more pics later when I get a chance.

Dude, I have a 03 GT-S with JBL premium system and I installed a DVD/MP3/Radio/TV unit and I was facing the same problem. I brought the car to one of my boys that has a shop in Farmingdale RT110 and he did his magic and hooked it up, I had my HU for over 6 months now and I sounds great. let me know if you want his info.

Might as well pm it to me, but I'm looking to do this myself to save money. But if I cant get the damn harness to plug in, its kind of hard to even get started.

TA-03 is your best bet with no guessing going on...

Any place I can pick that up locally? I've seen people recommend the 70-8112 all over the net...why would mine be any different?

i got my TA-03 from cardomain.com...shipping is pretty fast...i don't know why the CC harness doesn't fit. like i said before, i haven't tried. by the way, i did called around like 4 CCs around here, they all said they don't have anything for the 8 speaker system...

You MUST copy and paste the links into your address bar. Clicking them will not work, [img] tags will not work, its retarded and I know it, but its the only place I have to host pics.

Its all on a 2000 celica gts. All over the net, people say use either this one, or the scosche one. People say they are practically identical but the metra one has the resistors already on. If this one doesnt fit, why should I expect the ta-03 to? Does anyone actually have a pic of the ta-03's connector?

70-8113 is what you want, if you're using Metra (per Metra). The Scosche has resistors too.... just not enough resistance... depending on the pre-out levels of the HU you have to tailor the resistance... you may have to do the same with the Metra.
