i like having my rear tires wider than the front.. whats the widest tire anyone here has ever put on their celi? right now i'm running 235/45/r17's on the rear and 225/50/r17's on the front.. i work at a huge toyota/benz/a ton of other brands dealership and we took almost brand new 255/45/r17's off of a SL500.. and i'm going to pop them on my rear wheels, they might be too big..haha.. probably will be, but just wondering if anyone on here has ever done it or tried to do it..i know if they were 255/35 or 40's they would be fine for the rear, i dunno about the front.. what do you guys think??
lol go on, make fun.. but u have to admit wide rear tires look badass, even if it is a front wheel drive 1.8 liter lol

isnt it that rear wheel drive uses this setup to benefit from the wider tires in back? someone correct me if i'm wrong.

^^Yep. More traction and grip. FWD's have the wider tires up front and narrower tires in the back, but IMO that's just plain fugly. Better to stick with the same width all around.
mxsuperfly25 ... if you put wider tires in the back, people will think that you have a RWD! I'm actually curious to see this.

no, they won't think he has a RWD Celica.
they'll know he's a poser.
good luck with this.
next time, buy a RWD car if that's the "look" you want.

The wider tires in the rear will cause lots of understeer. As for fitment, unless you have a 8.5 or wider wheel those 255 will not fit. To be honest you're the type of people that steer me away from having a dealership work on my cars. You're the same people that don't know what the hell you're doing.

hurryhurry- yes, rear wheel drive cars benefit from it, i'm not autocrossing my celica
lightning rod- i don't think people will really think it's RWD, right now my rears are 235 and fronts are 225, you can't even notice... with 255 you could, i think it would look sick from the back.. if you think it's fugly, that's cool w/me
dailydog- if anyone is stupid enough to think i have a RWD celica, they don't know ****, and i don't care what they think of my car. i'm not trying to convince people i have a RWD.. but i guess i'm a poser.. if i wanted a RWD i would have bought one
redline and marco- i wash the cars. understeer, i don't think so. i could be wrong, if i put the 235's in the front and the 255's in the rear, thats not that big of a difference, i could see if i'm running 165's in the front or something.. and my borbet's are wide enough..
so back to the point, i dont care how ugly you think it's going to be, or if any idiot thinks my celica is RWD...
has anyone ever put 255's on their celica?

i dont know if you guys think i'm gunna run 255 rears and two pizza cutters up front or what.. 235 front, 255 rear.. people won't even notice the difference between front and rear.. i know everyone on here thinks they know so much more than the other posters but seriously.. i don't know what prestigous dealerships you work at, or how much technical schooling you've received to assume everyone else doesn't "know what the hell they are doing".

The 40 extra millimeter contact patch in the rear to the pavement is a big deal on a fwd car with factory understeer. Your car will understeer even more with the wider tires on the back. Not to mention the extra pointless weight you will be pulling with the wider tires. You need to look passed the ricer logic and do some research. I really dont understand why on Earth you would need wider tires on the rear in a Celica. You don't track the car and I doubt you have upgraded sways to induce oversteer. You could possibly use a wider tire then to get the car to a more neutral feel (whatever you drive style is like).

you car is going to get slower with that. Usually people get wider tires because they have power to back it up and want to actually have traction. I can imagine daily driving is going to get a bit worse.

yea, all that pointless weight will really bother me. i mean, an extra few cents at the gas pump, not to mention a couple tenths at the drag strip i never go to..
i don't NEED wide rears.. i like the look of wide tires i would rock the 255's in the front but i know they will rub. i guess i can't look "passed" my ricer logic, and my car will probably understeer so much under normal driving conditions i might just lose it.

You're a ricer, plain and simple. This is like putting on a big aluminum wing on a civic. Except you're doing it with tires.

i like the look of wide tires
with tires, go for function rather than looks. You are just going to spend more and get less if you know what i mean. I know people who buy tires for the look of the thread instead of how it performs through the seasons. I tell them the same since they regret it later.

"go for function"--- r u serious?? i guess narrow tires grip better, that's why drag cars have those little narrow tires on the back right?? and nascar tires are the same lil guys that come on toyota tercels right?? function..yea!! all about the function!!
oh hey redline.. i really care that you think i'm a ricer..b/c the opinion of a guy who talks trash in forums and has 3,438 posts must be golden..yea i am a ricer b/c i have wide tires.... you truly are the almighty god of car style..
you know what, what the hell, i'm gunna take my spare tire out to save weight, any passengers, my cd player, hell even my garage door opener, and buy 205 series tires.. for function..
thanks for the wisdom guys! :crazy2:
the only effect i'm going to notice is heavier steering..

You don't understand the concept of how tires work. Wider is not always better. There is an ideal tire size for every car and situation, be it autox or drag. Just because you have wider tires doesn't mean you'll have better handling (grip).
you truly are the almighty god of car style..
Thank you. Tires aren't style they're function. Just because the tire looks good doesn't mean it performs well. You just want the wider tires in the rear too look cool. That makes you a ricer.

you don't even have the power to back up those wide tires. I'm surprised that you dont' want the smallest and skinniest tires and rims so you can chirp the tires in all gears. You are a ricer.

Ok, Im hi jackin' this thread cause I have a legit question. lol. Anyways, I am getting rims that are 17in, +32 offset and the rims are 8.5 wide. I plan on getting 225/40-17 (Nitto Extreme 555s). Right now, I drive my car daily and I dont have any major power upgrades(yet)... so, being that my rims are wide (Work XD9s), is the tires good for the rim or should I get wider tires? I don't think I want to and I've even been given recommendation to get 215s instead and buy a better tire(because only tire in 225/40-17 is made by nitto). Please answer my question, I am serious and any tire suggestions are most wanted because Im having hella of a time figuring out what tire is best for my daily drive celica with light modification. I want drivability and function. HELP!

and im not looking for "looks" I want good affordable tires that will perform and not cause rubbing after i put them on.

225 would work great with those 8.5 inch wide rims. Wont' rub either. You can go 235 or 245 but i would do 225. And yes, i have seen this set up on a celica with the exact same width rims.

bronzerleaf, I have 225/40/17's on my rims, but mine are only 7" wide ... tires should fit your rim, but I'm not sure if they will sit flush with the lip ... although 225 is pretty wide for such a small car.
