I want to know where the heck do yall get your money to do all this Sh*t to your cars. I'm 17 and I have to make a $400 car payment each month and a $150 insurance payment. Plus Gas, oil changes ect.. It doesn't leave left with much money to pimp my car out. Do your parents pay for your stuff??....If not what do you do for a living, i want a job there!!!

I personally always had a problem with my parents paying for me. I moved out of my house at 18, and never looked back. I'm working in Downtown chicago now at a PC support job, making 50K plus without a college degree... and personally speaking, with a lot more pride in myself.
IT takes hard work, but anyone can do it.

I went to college, got a degree and a job. I'm 30 now and buy all my own thing.
When I was 17 I drove the old family car, a '79 Corolla. So, I started in a 10 year old car.
My question is, why (and how) does a 17 year old (with money problems) get the car to being with?

I just turned 20 and I pay for everything. 400 dollar car payment 300+ insurance per month and I work 50 hours a week and goto school full time. I make 45k a year at my job doing sales.

Well i don't exactly have money problems, i just don't have the extras to do cool stuff to my car right now. I'm a senior in highschool. work almost a full time job. I'm not planning on going on to college because i'll stay working where i'm at, which is American Family Insurance. And how i got it. I saved up $8000 for a down payment and my mom let me double what i had to finance the rest.

Very impressive, most folks your age have *no idea* what it takes to pay for the car that Mom and Dad bought them (I know I had no clue at that age).
Sounds like you have a pretty good plan. Be happy with stock, you have a new car, that's a nice luxury.
On the other hand, my extra 13 years of making bad decisions has taught me that a used car is always cheaper than a new one. Had you bought the best Celica you could find for $8000, you would have had a nice car, and *no* payments. Insurance would have been much lower as well.
I put $8000 down on the new Celica (back in Oct. 1999), and am paying $350 per month for another 2.5 years.
Had I bought an $8000 car I could have spent $350/month modding and repairing the car and I'd be way ahead of where I am now...

So, for you young folks with the outrageous insurance, and the high loan payments...
Is it worth it? Do you wish you had gotten a cheaper car (for insurance purposes as much as anything else)?
I drove a cheap car when I was in school (in 1990 I got rid of the '79 Corolla and got a '78 Celica with 76,000 miles for $2700 - paid cash). The car was nice, and with all the repairs over the next 10 years, the total bill was still under $4000 for the car and all the maintainence (2 new alternators, a new transmission, misc little stuff like tires). As for insurance - it wasn't worth putting collision on it, and even when I had 3 tickets (in 2 years) on my record I only paid $1800 per year insurance (Michigan had some of the nations highest rates, and insurance was mandatory).
75,000 miles of my own and the car was still running strong, it was rusted out though. I finally parted it out (made money selling some), and got a '73 Celica and a 2000 Celica. Even now, my wife and I have 3 cars, but only one car payment.

Looks like you're well on your way. If your not in a position right now to do anymore.. then just don't think about it... it would be a waste of your money and time to put yourself in debt over a car.. since you have so much more to do in your life right now. Like autox'er said.. just be happy u have what you have right now.. thats a lot more than most people your age got... and one day when you are done with school.. you'll be in a position to get something to make you forget about your current car anyway.
Good luck!

how does a 17 year old afford a car period where their insurance is skyrocket and with little credit history? Was it all worth it to purchase the car?
i am 22 and this is my first brand new car.. i am in the military.. i make somewhat enough to support myself.. only to a certain extent.. part time job supports my expensive tastes..
Hey now... I'm 17 and my parents haven't paid a dime on my car. They would if I wanted or needed them to but honestly... I don't. I pay my car note, insurance, and a bunch of other little anonymous bills every month... I work 40+ hours a week and I'm in school..... I'm a Junior, but I'm homeschooled so it makes it 10x better and gives me more time to work for mods on my baby :wiggle:

I'm sure her parents cosigned on the financing. If I had saved up the money she has when I was her age and my parents offered to do that I probably would have jumped on it too :). Plus se may still live at home with the parents so no rent or utility bills to speak of.

Well thanks everyone, yall made me feel a little better, hehe. To me it was worth getting a cool car. It makes it even more fun being young when your in a little sporty car. How do i afford it, well......Pretty much my whole paycheck goes towards my car and hopefully i'll get a lot of graduation money this June, and that will go towards my car too. But all of you guys questioning, Was it worth it, yeah it was. And it wasn't a brand new top of the line car either. I bought it in April. It's a 2000 red GT it had 20,000 miles on it and i only paid $14,785. No body thinks that i can afford it, but hey i think i'm doing pretty well at my age. I mean i have no other bills but the car. And get this, i even manage with OUT a cell phone. So hopefully my insurance job will pay off in a couple of years

How many months is your loan? $400/month for $8,000 is pretty high, or you will be payed off in 2 or so yrs, which is good.

It will be paid off in 2 years. And i do still live at home, but i have to pay $200 rent each month. It will go up more when i gradutate though

I agree with autoxr, the question is why does a 17 year old need a brand new Celica and high-paying job? You're young! Have fun, stay in school and study!
40+ hours a week and in school? You're crazy! That's also against the law! Kid's under 18 can only work more then 20 hours a week and cannot work past like 10pm? On School days... And 12am on weekends, unless you get premission...
Seriously, you only get your teenage years once! Don't stress about paying for a car, go out and have fun... I think a bunch of the older members of NewCelica will agree with me! You're a kid! Kid's don't stress about money and jobs!!! That's what parents are for!

And my job isn't that good paying woohoo i get a whopping 7.50 an hour on my weekday job and my weekend job which is cleaning peoples houses i get about $15-20 bucks an hour

I help install those tire marks in the Miller Park parking lot on Sunday afternoons

um, time to find a new job.. My best friend got a job doing IT work for our school district right out of HS making $45k a year, when he was 18!! and he got a 4 year contract, after which he plans on going to college. He bought himself a new WRX with all the STI aftermarket stuff and he's saving the rest for school.

I paid for the car in cash, so that helps a bit but the $230 a month insurance really sucks. Plus I only have a part time job. So I don't earn that much money, but the car is starting to take shape.

It is unlikely that you will be able to monitarily pay your parents back before you go to College (nor do they probably expect it). It would be nice if you had a part time job that would allow you to pay for your gas and various social activities. Other than that the biggest payback to a parent is to keep your grades up and be a responsible loving child. :)

What is your "almost" degree in? I know it easy for me to say and harder for you do actually do, but why not just finish it out? If it is in engineering you can make up that year of lost wages in your first year out. Anyways, at least you are being prudent and not diving in and buying a $25K car without knowing how to pay for it. You seem to be doing the best thing possible; waiting. These cars are only getting cheaper as more used ones are popping up. Good luck though, your GTS will come sooner than you think.
As for me, I am 20 and the celica is my 6th car (looks like a 7th is right around the corner). I try to be a very prudent buyer; I have made a profit on every car I have owned (minus gas and insurace, which really isn't vehicle dependent anyway). I buy it for less than its worth, and then when it depreciates nearer to where I bought it, I consider selling it and moving on.
My program in school has me taking classes for six months and working as a co-op for six months. I make good money, and I am able to support myself and pay for school and all that jazz. But, I try to be smart with money nonetheless. My friends always complain about how they are low on cash, but I alwas point out to them that the night before they ran up a $50 tab at the bars. Doing that several nights a month will drain a car payment and then some. I go out too, but i just try to moderate and stay within some kind of budget. Just prioitize: things come before the car (school, rent, food, etc..), but I would rather go out half as much and have a nice car than go out twice as much and have a bus pass.

My "almost" degree is in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. I'm planning on finishing out my degree starting Spring of '03 using the student assistance program through my work (they'll pay 100% if I pass every class). Right now I have more important priorities --- my girlfriend/fiance/wife-to-be (in November) - a nice apartment - and a business that I'm working on starting up doing advertising, graphics and web design. Life if busy busy right now and no time for school. Hopefully the biz will work out and the celi will come around as you said... "sooner that you think."
Know anyone that needs anything done, send them over to www.orbstorm.com in about another week or so. I should have my site operational by then. We do everything from websites to promotional posters, multimedia CD-Roms, business cards and CD Cover Art. Help a brother get a celica!
Until then, I shall lay in envy of all you ppl that I know are out driving your celi's tonight... <sigh> Maybe I'll have a dream about driving one tonight. I can only pray. (dang - no praying smilie!)

mom paid for my car. i consider myself really lucky.... got a part time job for it. she believes in rewarding before as an incentive to do well. (as opposed to rewarding for after good work's been done) well after i got the car, i worked hard, and have been accepted into a good college. i guess thats the best repayment i can manage as of now. (getting 7 an hour will not pay back the car no way no how) i've had my license for about a year before i got it. i dont see anything wrong with letting parents buy cars for kids... just the kids gotta earn it back one way or another.
Hey I go to school in milwaukee :) but yeah whatever... umm Well I am now 19 and actually i got my celi when i was 18 and well I guess it's easy for me to pay for because my insurance is very very low and my payments are low as well because my downpayment was nice. The way I see it is that if your paying almost all you make on a car you have then you shouldn't have bought it. Thats just insane to spend the majority of a paycheck on your car at a young age. Whatever... doesn't matter :)
