Today I did my second oil change. I usually do all of my changes on my car...but because it was new...I let toyota do it the first time. Anyways, I went to the dealership and got the filter, and stopped and got some oil. Went home and started...
...when i take the old filter off...its the one for the GT not the GT-S!
I am like WTF!
I swear i am never going back there again. Dumb bastards burn my clutch pulling it in, i find a scratch on it afterwards, and now to top it off...the wrong GD filter was installed. This wont hurt anything will it?. I mean ...its almost identical but the gt one is a little shorter...
I think I am going to go rip the service manager a new a$$hole tomorrow.

actually the gt and gts filters are extremely similar, the gts's is a little longer but it did no damage to put the gt filter on your car. these types of things are crossed all the time, its no big deal.
Dont flame me and say "then why did they make a diff. filter for the GTS" Im just saying that NO harm was done, and you shouldnt worry about it.

I swear I'm not flaming, but then why did they make a different filter for the GTS? LOL!
Seriously, they must be a little different for some reason or else they wouldn't be different. Even if having the GT filter on your GTS won't cause any damage to the engine, it may affect the performance in some way.
I would try to be understanding because it is honestly a really easy mistake to make, but I would take it back and demand that they change it.

Yeah, they did the same thing to me once (at least, according to my receipts - I never actually saw the wrong filter on my car).
Anyhow, I've taken both apart, and can confirm that both filters are made exactly the same way. Same drain-back valve, same by-pass valve, same design in every way except the length. I still consider that to be a major difference though, since the actual filter media section is about 30% to 40% longer on the GTS filter than on the GT. Driven gently, the GT-S likely won't see a difference. But, at higher revs, the extra area will allow better flow, which is very important at 8000 rpm!
By the way, the 30 - 40% difference isn't obvious when you look at the filters side by side. You have to take them apart to realize that the gaps between the filter media and the outer casing are the same on both filters, so in terms of percentage difference in filter area between the two, it is quite significant.
Also, I've taken apart a FRAM filter and looked at many pictures of filters on the net, and the Toyota filter is made differently than anything I've seen before. I looks like they're made to get the maximum filter area from a minimum size of filter, which should be good for flowrate. I really don't know how good the filtration media is on the OE Toyota filters, but the construction and design is top notch.

The GT only uses 4.0 qts of oil while the GT-S ues 4.5qts of oil. This explains why the GT-S oil filter is a big longer then the GT oil filter. However, both filter will work on either model.
