Well.. u guys might need to know that the pic is not real. It was made by computer (combine modena and celica) in some design software. I knew as soon as i saw the pic... cause i'm a graphic designer... So, don't expect to much...

I just don't think photoshop was out in the 70s and early 80s (DUH)...
As for the new ones, I'm sure they could have possibly done some of the backdrops on photoshop... but since it is such an expensive project, I'm sure they would have used a more advanced program like maya or 3dstudiomax not photoshop.

Backdrops in Movies are called Matty Paintings. Trust me, photoshop is a very DIVERSE program. You can generate photorealistic backdrops with Photoshop. Want to see a pro? goto www.goodbrush.com . Craig Mullins is my hero :) In fact Craig Mullins is working on the new Star Wars Series. What a Coincident ;). If anyone has ever seen the Original Dune series, you will have noticed some crappy matty paintings.
Also, 3Dsmax is for 3D animation. backdrops are generally 2D paintings. And for your information Photoshop is a very powerfull and widely used tool.

Back in the mid 80s...
I used DigiPaint and my Amiga1000 to create beutifull scenes :)
I think the PC was still running DOS3.2
and the mac had just hit the scene with a B&W GUI
