Hey guys, it's been along time since I've checked you guys out. Like this site alot, lots of good info, lots of experienced people to give advice.

Anyways....I drive a 5 speed TC. It has 42k miles on it. Recently the car has been screwing up because while it's in gear, the engine revs up so i have to accelerate slowly in order to move. The problem got progressivly worse over a week. I took it to the dealership here in Lubbock tx, and they said I blew my clutch, my pressure plate, and something bearing (forgot the name of the part). They quoted me $1600 to do the repair. I asked him how much labor and parts were and he said $300ish for parts and $1000ish for labor +tax blah blah blah. Anyways wtf? I don't have $1600 for this crap. I definately don't think the labor should cost this much, especially exeeding the part costs more than 2x.

Should I look online and buy an aftermarket clutch and get it installed at a local race or mechanic shop? can someone give me some more information about the pressure plate and the ......bearing. Are those parts just needed, or is toyota just telling me I need them. Your advice is definately appreciate. thanks

If you want to keep your powertrain warranty for another 18K, you'll have to get the repair done at the stealership. Might want to shop around different ones to see if they can come up with a more realistic price.

If you don't care about the warranty, a regular shop should charge around $300-500 for the install. The bearing that was most likely damaged was the throwout/release bearing, basically bridges the clutch release fork (static) and pressure plate (rotating). It can be damaged by holding the clutch in for too long, since that's when it's in use. It'll overheat and seize up, and start squealing when the clutch is engaged.

A new clutch kit should come with the clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing, but many prefer to use a Toyota bearing instead. Even if they're not completely trashed, it's a good idea to replace all 3 when the tranny is removed, due to the labor cost. You'll also need the flywheel resurfaced, but that's not expensive at all, and included in the labor.

its actually more of around 700 bucks total clutch kit 120ish labor is 500...i had mine done for that much, and that was a s2k which was more complicated in a way.

IMO rent a engine hoist and do it yourself, get to know ur car a lil better and its cheaper by alot
