I'm seriously considering trading in my 2000 GT for a new GT-S. I was wondering if anyone here did something similar, and what kind of deal they got.

I need some info from you guys so I can go into the dealership armed :bang: Thanks

I did the opposite and got $800 back (traded 00 for 00 with comparable miles)

No worth it in my opinion, I'd rather get something that's going to spank some a$$ like a Evo.

Man you got ripped off!

Why?

Look at the blue book trade-in value for a 00 GT-S. Compare the retail value for a 00 GT. Explain to me how I was ripped off.

I checked on KBB.com and same year car, both with with 35,000 miles and exact same options. The 00 GT-S has a $3,000 more trade in retail value.

I traded my GT for a Spyder! Ok it's not a GTS.

But seriously YOU MUST DRIVE ONE, if any of you like handling, this is your car. There's just so many things that will keep this car so special no matter what comes out. I love how this little car is so "underground" cuz no one understands how great it is.

What is "trade in retail value." KBB will give you 3 different prices: trade-in value, private party price, and retail price.

Trade a car in at a dealer, and you should expect to get trade-in value for your trade-in and pay retail for the car you're buying. Comparing trade-in values isn't a real-world scenario. Here's what I got from kbb.com for both cars w/ 20K miles (which is what they had when I traded):
Trade in on 00 GT-S: $16,100
Retail on 00 GT: $18,100

So, according to kbb, I should have owed $2000.

So explain to me again how I got screwed? (by the way, that was $800 out the door...after taxes, fees, registration).

NoCones: The dealership is wanting at least 9k for a 2002 GT-S in trade! AHAHAHAHA nevermind

143hawaii: I haven't driven one, but I like those Spyders too. Problem is, I need SOME trunk space. For the work I do, Celica's cargo space is really as small as I can handle.

I'm thinking now I may trade in my Celica for a cheap Tacoma for my daily commuter, and then keep my eyes peeled for a nice Supra/300z/RX-7/2g MR2 for fun.

Anyone else do something like this?

Why did you do that?

Autocross reasons. On most autocross courses, the GT is capable of being just as fast as the GT-S, yet it runs in a slower class.

I did it and if I had to do it again I would wait and get a WRX STi.

I guess when you compare trade-in with retail value it is not that bad. But for $800, I'll rather have 40HP from lift. Do you really autocross that much? Are you a pro-autocrosser?

Well, I'd rather have a car capable of winning a national championship in its class. And the $800 for a set of Hoosiers.

I autocross a fair amount. This year, I'll probably do about 10 local events and 4 national events.

As for being a Pro, definitely not...no one is...it's certainly not a sport you get into for $$$.

Lift is great at the stoplight or on the strip, but you generally can't make use of it on an autox course...esp w/o an LSD.

I did it. Got 16500 for my GT and paid 18000 for my GTS. Both 2001 models. The GT had 13000 mile and GTS had 3600 miles. An auto GT is a very boring car. If you get a GTS don't misshift. Huge pain in the ass.

Wow, you guys got really good tradein values for your GTs. I only got $14k for my '01 GT 5-Spd. Then again my car had no options, except floormats if you can even consider that an option.

Peabody, I'd still just test drive a Spyder for the fun of it and pray that you get a nice salesman that let's you rip her around the corners a bit. I don't know if this really helps but they also sell luggage racks and trailer hitches for the Spyder. I have neither, I've just come to deal with the fact that yes luggage space sucks. But then again, sports cars were never designed to get grocerries and pick up the kids! Oh well, I love to hear what people think of this "niche" car.

i currently own a 01 GT but in a few months i will be trading it in for a gts.....the auto doesnt seem to do anything for me..but i see nothing wrong with upgrading from a gt to a gts..unless your gonna stick with the gt and put a turbo in it

Yeah selling would be the way to go for top dollar, but last time I sold a car I had so many freaks calling and coming over that I don't want to do that again for a long time. :nono: However if one of you guys want it, I'll cut ya a deal ;)

Plus besides avoiding the selling process, another benefit of trade-in is you only pay sales taxes on the new car value over and above your trade-in value (at least in this state)

The downside is that my few mods actually hurt trade-in value, especially the 17" rims, go figure :thumbdown

GT-S, Spyder, Evo VII suggestions are all cool, but I'm having problems justifying forking out those $$, then giving a nice new car about 500 miles/week on some nasty roads. So I'm still leaning towards the cheap new Tacoma + used sports car route (can't get TWO new vehicles...still paying on my wife's car  )

Anyways back to the original topic! eva-01 and GeeTeeEss, your experiences make me cringe, but I appreciate the feedback. So do you guys think it was worth it? Did you do it just for the extra HP or some other reason? :)

yah i would do it again but i would've gone and actually attempted to sell my car. I got the GT-S i actually wanted SUPER WHITE with leather, sunroof, 4 disk breaks and no spoiler. I also liked the fact that it had LIFT and 6 speed. The GT-S is definately more fun to drive than the GT IMHO. Oh and i liked the fact that it had more letters ahah j/p.

Yeah I'm selling mine to get my 6 speed. It should have the sign and be parked somewhere in the next month. I first have to take out my intake and get some other little mods off.

I'm a little discouraged though cause I hope it sells fast. How long did it take you guys to sell yours?

Peabody,

If you decide to take the Spyder, I know you won't regret it if you're looking for a "true sports car." I'm sure everyone knows about the great cars comming out, 350Z, EVO VII, and way more. But the Spyder will ALWAYS have certain things going for it that many other cars won't. One, midengined, show just one of the new cars that has a mid mounted engine. None. Two, it's a feather weight at only 2185lbs with about 1/8 tank of gas and even less with the spare, jack, tools removed. Third, limited production, with only about 5k-6k Spyders brought in a year, this car is going to be rare. Last, drop top baby!

P.S. This is not to slander any other cars. Comparing a FWD to RWD car is like apples and oranges. I'm just trying to "spread the love."
