This is not an interest thread. First we need to pick a wheel that would be good to start an interest thread with. If enough people are interested, Many and I would like to get a group buy going.

This is the wheel Many likes....

Rac monolites 17X8 13.4 lbs. Not sure what the price would be yet for a group buy, but we'll find out if enough people like this wheel.

http://www.sector111.com/images/products/wheels/16_17/rac/black_large.jpg

And these are the two I like....

Motegi Trak lite and Trak lite 2, both are the same weight and price. 17X8 14.5 lbs. These sell for about $300 each, but maybe we could get that price down with a group buy.

Trak lite in gun metal....

Trak lites on Stephen's S2000....

Yes, Stephen Papadakis is a bandwagon hopper and is now into drifting.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Feel free to post other suggestions. Thanks.

The Rac monolites aren't available in 5x100 if we get 20 wheels made (that's 5 sets) they can do a special order!

Good thread Eric! Are the track lites 17x8 +35?
Thanks many. This was your idea, so if we can't make it happen and people start yelling at us....I blame you.

The only Trak lite available right now is the flat black. 17X8 +45 offset. As you know, this would fit, but it's not the perfect offset. +45 would be a little too tucked into the fender.
the track lite ver 1 gunmetal with polished lip look gorgeous

Yes it is. Good choice.
is 3 enough for a gb, i really am looking for some nice lightweigt 17s, what prices are we looking at?

Sorry, I have no idea what the price could be and most companies don't consider 3 sets worth doing a GB. If we get enough people that can agree to buy the Trak lite (for example) I'll start an interest thread. Then I'll send the thread to Motegi and all of the sponsors on this site.

If we can't get enough people....I'll say to hell with you guys and just order a set for myself at the price they go for right now.
man i would be in for the gunmetal with polished lip if we can get a GB

Great. I was hoping you guys would like that one. That's the one I want too. I have always liked the Roja Formula 5, but it was way too expensive. The Trak lites look just like them though, plus they are lighter and cost a lot less.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b215/Us3dToil3tP4p3r/ah.jpg

I would probably powder coat mine silver though. Very clean look....

i thoguht u bought the g-games already? or was that someone else. Well since Ro_JA stopped making the forumla 5's, i guess parent compnay motegi decided to keep the light weight 5 spoke idea. 17in formula 5's actually weigh 14 also i believe. I have been looking everywhere for those, can't find them anywhere.

tracklites are forged not sure about the rac monolites, im sure they are also forged due to its weight. I believe forged rims are stronger than casat rims therefore should hold up to more abuse. anyone want to chime in?

Yes, but my G-games are just for street use. Now I need track wheels.

The Formula 5 was 14.5 lbs for the 17X7. Going an inch wider would make them a little heavier. Nothing that would make a difference though. They are both very lightweight.
how would a 14lb wheel hold up to a pothole? Not sure, but when I see a pothole, I go around it.

I'm not sure what the price would be on those. many showed me the email from that company, but I didn't understand it....they said a one off would cost $6  What the hell does that mean....$600 each?....$6000 a set?

I posted this thread on Allgencelica. Not sure why I did that. They don't give a rats ass about lightweight wheels.

$6000?!!!! Screw that! Even if they cut that price in half, it would be too much money. I think we can cross that wheel off our list.

Eric are the mags you're looking at 17x8 +35?
No, they are 17X8 +45. I'm sure we could get them to make a +35 though. It looks like we almost have enough people interested in the Trak lites already. If a couple more say they are interested, I'll contact Motegi and our sponsors to see if they can get these made for us.

Would you buy a set? Or are you set on those Monolites?

I emailled them again today , asking the curent price list on 17x8 for the regular ones.
The magnesium ones are only for hard core and are a special order only;
hence the "sky-high-need-to-pimp-the-wife-to-be-able-to-afford" price. :rimshot:

But I'm with you on this I think the're going to be way higher priced then the TRAK lites.
I like those monolites, but these wheels will be for track days only so I really dont care that much.
And yes I would be IN for those Trak lites .

Great. I was hoping you would go for a set. Yes, I have seen a car with the 17X8 Trak lites and a BBK.

IMO, they are as close to perfect as we can get....good price....very lightweight....they fit over a BBK and they look great. Even if we can't get Motegi to make us a few sets in +35, the +45 really wouldn't be that bad.

Wow, $288 is damn good. I thought $320 was the norm. 1k shipped for a set would be outstanding. Sounds like a good price to shoot for.

I don't have an extra 1k right now, but I'll roll up all my coins or something. Or maybe start slashing prices in my for sale thread.

Allgen is a much smaller forum, therefore there are many less people who are serious about racing, and out of those that are, have money to afford a set of track wheels.

I'd love a set, but I'll have to wait a year for my account to refresh.

I realize it's a smaller forum, but the people that are there don't even view the thread. You don't have to be into racing to know the benefits of a lightweight wheel.

they come in 8spoke for 4 lug cars and 10 for 5lug, the 8 spoke looks alot better to me, the offset looks horrible on the 10lugs (18 in rims on the acura). I have been looking for some nice 17in forged rims, and these would be pretty cheap, more around 800shipped.

and as far as the demand of lightweight 17in rims, i have seen very few members on nc.org that are own forged 17ins, if any they all get 18in. Dont blame them, but i dont see the poiint in getting lightweight 18s.

badceli

but i dont see the point in getting lightweight 18s
18's are okay for daily driving. I got 18's just because I liked the looks of them and I knew they would fit over my BBK. But if I could only have one set of wheels, I wouldn't have bought them.

Got an Email back from racmonolites:

Hi Manny,

I'll have to look closer at pricing. Each new fitment we build entails a
development and JWL/VIA certifcation process that we would have to pass on
to the group. I'd say we could get them to you at least at the Elise
wheels retail which is $2850.00.. Likley it would be a few hundred less.
Obiously the more wheels built the lower the costs will be per wheel.

Weight should be 13.5 lbs. Prodiuction and delivery could take up to 5
months. I know this is a long production delay but there are only a few
forges that can do this type of work and it is always booked far in
advance.

Let me know your thoughts..

Thanks,
Chuck

That would be a pretty good deal, but still twice as much as the Traklites. Plus it looks like most of us would rather have the Traklites.

Not sure if the 5 people that have shown interest is going to be enough to make this happen though. We'll see.

That would be great. Thank you.

Most of us want the gun metal with polished lip. Two want flat black. Shouldn't be a problem for those two guys to powder coat theirs.

I know you sell the fn01-rc, but what do you think about getting a deal going with these Traklites? If you started a GB, I'm sure they would sell.

Motegi makes a 17X8 +45 and all we want to change is the offset to +35. Shouldn't be too much of a problem right?

Only bad thing is that rim1 cant get motegi to do custom offset, hopefully azntrd can hook us up.

For me, this would be the funnest part about having a daughter. (no, I don't want to touch the boys) I'm talking about messing with them.

Did you ever see the movie Bad Boys II? There is a scene where some kid comes to pick up Martin Lawrences' daughter for a date and Will Smith pretends to be a drunk uncle that just got out of prison. Him and Martin mess with this kid until he is about to piss his pants.

I loved that scene and I would love to do the same thing to kids coming to pick up my daughter.

I would, but it still looks the same. Knife has been working on the electronics and motor all this time. I don't mind the wait though. Peter Knife has spent so many hours perfecting this car, that it will be worth the wait. I would like to tell you guys about all the new modifications he has done, but that's a whole other thread.

The Traklite don't come in black with a polished lip though....only the Traklite 2 does. Which design did you want? Would you mind having a set of gun metal Traklites powder coated if that's the only ones we can get made?

Negator on the tracklite 2... I like the other tracklite alot and i am really looking for black with polished lip :(

If we agree to do this will we all be getting the same style rim? I would imagine that for a custom 35mm offset they would prefer to manufacturer them in bulk...

I'm not sure if we will have to choose just one style. Let's see what aZnTrD2k finds out for us. If we can only get gun metal, it should only cost about $40 a wheel to have them powder coated gloss black I think. Plus you would have the only gloss black set if you did that :naughty:

If we get these wheels made, nobody can say...."Man, those wheels are so played out".

Nobody has these wheels.

Also, I forgot to answer your question about the price....Tire Rack sells them for $288 each here....
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/DisplayWheel.jsp?wheelMake=MOTEGI+TRACK&wheelModel=TRAKLITE&wheelFinish=Anthracite+w%2FMach+Lip
But we are hoping to get them for about $1000 shipped for a set. That's only if we are lucky though. We don't even know if Motegi will do a GB for us yet. They might just say...."Yes, we will make you a few sets with the +35 offset, but we can't sell them for less than $288 each" We'll see.

I've been intouch with Motegi's manager about this. HE said lead time will be 3months. He'll get back with me with the least quantity for special ordered wheels.

Thank you very much for helping us on this. I appreciate that very much. You can have my first born. Too bad you couldn't get them to make an 18X8.5 -5 offset for that APR Celica of yours. That would be a nice set of wheels for your car.

itchyvi3t
05-12-2006, 12:15 AM
i dont think it will look that bad, im more afraid of rubbing issues, looking at shiezens pics, he is only about 5mm away from the rear control arm. Yes its an 8.5in wide, but they are 18in. The traklite have and extra +1 and only 17in. Since there is an in less you have to factor in the slope of the arm, depending how much it slopes inward per inch. That clearance lost from the extra .5in lengh hast to be offset by the .5 in clearance we gained from the width. Make sense? and that is just clearance about the side, i dont know if it will be hitting the rotor/strut/etc.

i would really want someone to test out an 17x8 with close to +45 before we all collect 5k+ for these sets of rims

I agree. Why take the risk of rubbing.

+35 or nothing. That's why I like this site. I might have bought the +45 and wasted a lot of money. In fact, the guys at Discount Tire tried to convince me to buy the +45. When I told them I wanted the Traklite in +35, they said....

"Motegi doesn't make that size wheel for your car for a reason, it's the wrong offset. Motegi knows what they are talking about and they recommend a +45 for the Celica".

I said...."Tell Motegi to shove that +45 wheel up their ass, I'm not buying it". Then walked out.

Of course. Any wheel can be polished. In fact that's what I do for fun....I strip the paint off parts of my car, then polish them until they look chrome. I think the SSR's look great in gunmetal with a polished lip....here is a 17X8 +35 with a 235/40/17....perfect!

Hi Guys,
I have some bad news. :( With the Japanese yen falling at the rate it's going we can't do a group buy. Our web prices are actually too low as it is and they will be going up.

If the exchange rate situation changes for the better, we may be able to do a group buy in the future.

For now, the best we can do is just our web prices.

Good....one less person that will have the same wheel as I do :chiglaugh

Seriously though, it would only be $288 more for a set than what we were going to spend on the Motegis. I have spent $300 in one weekend before, then woke up monday morning and forgot what the hell I spent it on.

It's not just the name "SSR" I'm after. If your going to modify your car, why not get the best parts money can buy? In my opinion....this is the best wheel you can buy. You won't find a lighter 17X8 for under $400 and this wheel looks damn good on a Celica.

Plus it's already made in the perfect size we need. To hell with trying to get a company to make a custom wheel for us.

A lot of people don't understand why somebody would spend an extra couple hundred dollars just to get lightweight wheels. They don't realize what a couple pounds of unsprung weight will do.

I will shave every pound possible off my car except for carpet. I can't do the gutted metal interior look. I still want the interior to look nice, but when my car is finished, I want to know that I didn't everything possible to make it as fast as it can be.

So how about you....what kind of car do you want your Celica to be....an average car with cheap parts....a show car....or a performance car?

yea i know what you mean, if i dont buy the best i end up selling watever i settled for and buy the best, so why not just buy the best in the first place.

One thing is that im not rich, nor will i be for a while. Still in college with future plans for grad school and all, quite frankly i cant afford to waste too much money on my car. 2nd im asian, i like to get the most for my money :), i feel i did pretty good to make my car look good on a budget. 3rd i cant justify overspending for a car like the celica, i love it and all but there is no potential to a point. I rather modify my brothers 350. 4th my car is a daily, in Los Angeles, roads/small parking spaces/no garage tkaes a toll on my car, so why buy 1000+ rims to have the cracked/dented in a couple of years (if im lucky). I set my spending limit for 1k and i feel im stepping my bounds on that one. Im jealous of peopel that can spend so much on their car, i hope to keep my car till after med school then go all out on it. Till then im stuck with low grade usdm stuff

It wasn't too long ago that I also started to think this. I even started shopping for an MR2 Spyder to drop my motor into, but I couldn't do it. All it took was for me to see a good looking Celica fly by on the freeway and I remembered why I started this project of mine.

The Celica is a sexy little car and it has more potential than you might think. If an SRT-4 (Neon with a turbo) can run 10's, than so can we....
http://videos.streetfire.net/player.aspx?fileid=B2418C82-2889-4E88-9E76-F0909E475DB5

If you don't think 10's are fast....remember, an 06 Lamborghini Gallardo runs 12's and an 06 Z06 runs 11's. As for top speed....c2gas calculated that my Celica should be able to hit 200 mph when it's done.

If you don't care about 1/4 mile tracks or top speed runs, than maybe autocross or rally is more your thing. About 20 years ago I used to race my friends down this canyon road near my house in California. 30 miles of S-turns. I loved that road. I drove my Celica back to Cali just to race on that road again. 80 mph through those sharp turns and I never did break the tires loose.

When I got back home I decided to put my Celica in the shop and make it even better. That was 3 years ago and it's been in the shop ever since. Almost done now though.

The next mods I want to do is more weight reduction. Have you guys heard of a member here named superman1240? This guy is a weight reduction freak....
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/member.php?u=10002

The last time he weighed his Celica, it weighed 1930 lbs! I was amazed when I saw that. Now he has added doors with lexan glass. He doesn't post much, but I follow his work closely and look forward to his next mod.

Anyway, sorry for rambling.

LoL i agree, i love the celica, always have always will, but the amount of $ spent on the celica would do alot more in a better car. ex 4k (hardware only) to boost the celica for 230-250whp. 4k (hardware only) to boost the 350, 400whp, you can only do so much with FF. That aside i still really want to be boosted right now but other things holding me back, money/tuning options/living in cali. Im def keeping the celi but right now not practical in dumping loads of money into it. So im just gonna sit by while you white guys buy all the nice stuff and have sick rides... just give me 30 yrs. True, the 350Z is a great car, but there are a couple things wrong with it....

1. I don't have one.

2. I don't have an extra $30,000 to buy one.

3. They weigh 3,400 lbs.

Why do I keep talking about weight?....It's all about power to weight ratio my friend. Weight/hp. A stock Celica GT is slow because it needs 1 hp to move 17.3 lbs.

A lotus Elise kicks ass because 1hp only needs to move 10.4 lbs.

A 400hp 350Z would be pretty fast because 1hp only needs to move 8.5 lbs.

A 300hp Celica needs 1hp to move 8 lbs.

Me....I'll need 1hp to move 3.2 lbs.

As for money....30k for a 350Z + 4k for a turbo kit = $34,000
Or....................7k for a Celica + 4k for a turbo kit = $11,000

As for RWD vs. FWD....there are tricks to reduce wheel spin on fwd cars....two step rev limiter....traction control....or drag straps. Any of these will work. I'll be using all of them.

Am I saying an 11,000 dollar 300hp Celica can be faster than a 34,000 dollar 400hp 350Z?....yes, I sure am.

Do I sound like an idiot that has had way too much to drink tonight and doesn't know what the hell he is talking about?....Maybe, but nobody else is reading this thread anymore, so who cares.

Tires now!!!
Do you think they can get them?
I'm curently using 225/45 R17 wich make it a 8.8" inch wide at the tread.

These sizes will all fit on a 8" rim.

Tire size------------overall diameter----------thread width
225/45 R17------------------24.9"-------------------8.8"
235/40 R17------------------24.4"-------------------8.9"
245/40 R17------------------24.8"-------------------9.7"

I never thought on putting a 245 , but I think we can pull it off.

I'm sure they could get tires, but they don't even list tires on their site, so I'm guessing they don't really deal with tires.

www.tirerack.com seems to be the best place to buy tires. I wish I had bought mine there instead of Discount tire. I would have saved some money. Plus I would have gone with a different tire.

After reading reviews on the Dunlop SP Sport FM901 I just bought....it seems that it wasn't a good choice. They are ranked #41 out of 47 tires. Oh well, I'll burn these off and get something better next time.

The ones with an * I'm leaning towards them.

And this is why you are in a league above most of us. There is no way in hell I could spend $1000 on a set of tires that only last 3000 miles. Not until I better job anyway. But for now, my bank account would drop to 0 very quickly buying tires like those all the time.

When I race, it will just be for fun. So these would probably do me fine....
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=ECSTA+MX
They are $100 each and last about 30,000 miles. Most people say they are great for the track. I'll try a set of these, then I'll try a set of the expensive ones once and see if there is that much of a difference.

But you think those tires you mentioned are really that much better? I have no idea. :shrugs:

but the amount of $ spent on the celica would do alot more in a better car.
One more thing on this subject....just because I said you can build a fast Celica for a small amount of money, doesn't mean it's anywhere near the best car you can build. If somebody said to me...."I really like my Celica and want to add a turbo....do you think I should?" I would say...."Sure, but don't spend too much on it. Just turbo your stock motor....make your Celica look good with some nice wheels and a body kit, then upgrade your suspension and you will have a very cool little car.

Now let's take 02VaderCelica for a different example....when he was in Iraq last year, he sent me an email and said...."Hey, your car is very cool and I want to do the same to mine. Can you help me with that?"

I said...."Sure I can help you....here is the best advise I can give you....Don't do it!! Do you have any idea how much money I have spent and what kind of car I could have for that money?!!

But he didn't listen to me. He lives down the street from me and I see him around all the time. He will have a nice car when it's done though.

my goodness (from your modlist and that supra) . Well i guess we pay to have things unique/personalized. That supra is nice but i would like to start on a clean slate. As far as celica price vs 350, both are really of no cost to me since i really didnt pay for the 350 and the celi is paid off, so i was comparing mod for mod.

but as far as your car, i had no idea your mods were that extensive rather thna the turbo............................................. .... wow, finish that puppy and get it on the dyno/track/drag.

No not really I just want to have a set for track only!

And slowlly get some with a bit more Threadwear on it (as it's costing me too a lot of money). Besides the more you track the car the less you want to speed and go crazy on the road. Or maybe the "daddydiaperchangingconstantcryingsleepdeprivingno$ ex" is starting to change my ways :crazy2:

That's the best thing you could do. You need to try out tires with your current setup then gradually try some with a lower thread wear so you can feel the difference.
The thing with compound R tires is in order to get a very notisable grip they need to heat up. Once they do they are amazing. Cold they tend to behave like regular high performance tires.
And with these tires the lose of grip is gradual, so you can sort of predict and ease up rather then loosing control.

It's just 4 tires!!!! What's the big deal. I'm not rich by any means I do own my own business(car and detailing shop). I'm 37 btw. My car is paid up, I dont smoke, dont go out. my goodness (from your modlist and that supra) . Well i guess we pay to have things unique/personalized.
But there is nothing unique about my car. It's just another Celica with a TRD kit and 70k put into it.
That supra is nice but i would like to start on a clean slate.
:furious: Are you kidding me?! Not sure if that deal is for real, but if a bank would loan me $14,000 I would fly there and buy that thing tomorrow. I posted that car in the "cars for sale forum" and everybody is saying that it can't be real....too good to be true. That thing is worth at least 40k.
finish that puppy and get it on the dyno/track/drag.
That's all I ever think about. I would pay Peter Knife an extra 1k if he would just hurry and finish my car, but it seems the shop has come to a screeching halt trying to figure out the fuel system and ECU I guess.
"daddydiaperchangingconstantcryingsleepdeprivingno$ ex"
:chuckles: This is why I will never have kids.
Not a lot of people have done what you have done.
That's because most people are smarter than I am. Thanks for trying to sugar coat it, but the fact is....anybody that spends 70k on a Celica is a dumbass.
you should open your own business
I would give my left nut to own my own business. Did you know that one of your nuts is worth 75k? No kidding. Is that enough to start a small business?

Maybe I'll go back to Iraq for another year....earn 100k, then come back and sell one of my nuts. 175k should be enough to start a shop. We really need a good shop in this town. We have about three of them and they all suck very badly. I want to own a shop that people can take their car to have anything done to it....performance, paint, interior etc.

Thanks for the compliments. You let me know if you ever need a partner. I can detail the hell out of a car.

And stop saying "threadwear"....it's treadwear.
well maybe bad .. but not me.
Negative. I can't afford diddly squat right now. I'm still a damn pizza boy that only makes about $3,500 a month.

Guess we have a different definition of "unique". A unique car would be one that makes me say...."Wow, I have never seen anything like that before".

Mine will look like an average Celica. It just has a few mods done to it. Nothing unique.

Yes, but SSR's are JDM. All the cool kids say JDM>custom :chuckles:

I'm kidding of course. I don't care where the hell a part is made. I just like the SSR's better. Not that the Traklites aren't a great wheel, I would also be very happy with a set of those.

And once you open the hood people will be blown away.
I do love my motor. I used to spend hours polishing every inch of it. And that's when it was pretty much stock. Now I'll have much more to polish. I'll be very eager to pop my hood when people ask.

I don't care about winning Best of Show at car shows anymore. The one year I did go to shows, I won 1st place at every show and that was great, but now I want a different trophy....I want best motor at Hot Import Nights. If I don't get, I'll go to each judge and punch them in the mouth.

In 2002 I seen a picture of The Red Dragons motor....it was love at first site. Everything was spotless and all the pipes were polished to perfection. I knew I had to have a motor that looked as good as his....

Sorry, we go off topic sometimes. I'll do a quick recap for you....

This is a search for the perfect 17" lightweight wheel. Some people here want to get this Motegi Traklite made....

http://www.newcelica.org/photopost/data/500/18208traklite.jpg

They are only $288 each, but the best offset they come in is a +45 and we were trying to get some +35 made.

Then Many found this SSR Type C. It's the perfect size, but they are $360 each. These are the ones I'm buying though....

Nothing to be jealous of, it's just an old Civic that anybody with an extra $3,500 could buy. I want to do this one myself though. Shops are doing all the work on the Celica because I don't trust myself to do it. Too much money invested in that thing for me to screw up.

Simple....all you have to do is spend a ton of money replacing every single part on the motor, then add a big enough turbo and enough fuel and you will have 550 whp. Then after you do all this, you will probably realize that you just ruined your car as a daily driver and go buy an old Civic.

Tempting, but I'll have to pass for now.

i still dont understand how pizza delivering makes so much money... i use to work that over the summer and didnt make shizzle..

I work a lot of hours. Last night I worked 14 hours and made $230. When people say...."Man, I wish I had extra money to buy parts like you do", I think...."Why don't you get off your ass and get a second job".

Three more nights and I'll have enough to buy the SSR wheels I want.

You can just deliver pizzas on the weekend if you want, but don't just tell them the price and hand them the pizza, then expect to get a good tip. Before I even get to the door, I figure out what kind of person they are. There are many tricks to getting a good tip, but here are just a couple examples....

1. If they are a snob with a new BMW in the driveway, you say...."Nice car, aren't you afraid something will happen to it sitting out there?" Then look at them like you're crazy and thinking about doing something to it if they don't tip you. Good for a $5 tip everytime.

2. If they have a modified car, you compliment them on it and ask them about it. Be carefull with this one though. Sometimes they think I'm actually interested in their piece of crap car and spend the next 20 minutes telling me about it. Big waste of time.

3. Old ladies love compliments on their garden.

4. Fat or ugly girls like it when you flirt with them.

Those are just a few to get you started. Maybe I'll write a book sometime.
