i dont know what to pick, im leaning toward the matrix but the civic is a great car too plus they are both in the 15,000 to 16,500 price range

i would think the matrix would have more legroom front and rear, and more cargo room. the engine is nice too.

I'd go with the matrix, not only it's a Toyota but I've had terrible experience with Honda. I bought a brand new 2003 Accord coupe EX 3 years ago, some terrible interior rattling noise could never be fixed, and like any other Honda, the window motor sucks...on the driver side windows, it has an auto-up feature, which is nice, but the problem is while the window is closing, it kinda got stuck in the middle and it will then go down again, so I've had enough of the car then I traded it in with a Mazda3S and I think that car is lack of power, so I bought a Celica GT-S.
My sister used to have the matrix XRS 6-speed, it's nice, although the engine on the lower model has like 135hp, it's powerful enough to get you from point a to point b, and I've driven a new Corolla before so I know the power of the car is not too bad. The only thing is the Civic get a couple of miles per gallon gas mileage.

I think the Matrix looks better than the Honduh.

Why not the Mazda 3 hatchback? It's in the same class but you get more for your money.

i would get the matrix over the honda, i test drove a new civic and it seemed like it was lacking power, it smelt odd, and drove like an oldsmobile. The matrix feels better and more confident on on-ramp.
i too would suggest a mazda3 base 5 door. Same room, better looks, more power, less plastic, 5 speed auto with a manumatic. and it really would only be about $20-30 more a month financing it.

Mazda3 look nice, but it lacks power, I had a Mazda3S last year and it claims to have 160hp, but you really have to push the car up to 4K rpm on every gear until you can really tell the torque start to pull, below 4K the engine is like dead, and this is the high end model, it hardly could get over 26mpg, but for the regular Mazda3, I'm not sure how's the performance will be, I would guess it's even worse than the S model (because it's the base model). And plus the resale value of the Mazda.....you can forget about it, I lost my arms and my legs and my nuts to traded in for my Celica !! Just my .02

If you don't mind the lack of power, definitely get the 3. Easily the most fun to drive out of the three, and pretty refined for its class.

What about a new Scion? Those are pretty cheap and you can get it brand new.

Scions are for ricers.
No JK. He is looking for more space. the only thing that would really be better is an xB, but its still tiny and has way less power than the other cars he is looking at.

i had a 2000 gt celica before, so i think its the same hp
new Civic 4 door looks great (super steep windshield), gets insane gas mileage (40+ mpg), has plenty of power and plenty of room - plus its a Honda. I've owned two Civics and they started every single time - no problems. They rock.

How about a new Yaris? They are within your price range and plenty roomy. I'd also check out the Honda Fit if I were you.

im getting the matrix because it has plenty of space , its reliable and its a TOYOTA
I just got about 10 autoweeks from my girlfriend's dad, and they won't stop talking about the Fit - they absolutely love that car.
They hate the Yaris - they say its better than the Echo but still hands down the worst car Toyota currently offers, second to the 1.5L Scions (because they have more options/features).
