I just bought a 2000 GTS with the 6 spd. a few days ago. Anyway, I didn't really get on it until now! I was driving about 45 in 5th gear when a civic pulls up next to me wanting to race, I tried throwing it back in 2nd really fast... but it wouldn't go in!! It didn't grind or anything, it just didn't go in! I kept the revs up and pushed the clutch in again and tried frantically throwing it in 2nd... but it still wouldn't go in!! By that time, the civic was way ahead!! It really sucked!! A few minutes later, I tried downshifting shifting again from 45 really fast, but it still wouldn't go in. I tried it one more time except this time i shifted slower, and it went in fine!!! IS THIS NORMAL? My last car was a 99 civic si and I used to be able to just SLAM it in 2nd with no problem!!! I hope my GTS is messed up!!! Please help!

Sorry about that, but I'm really paranoid! I just spend a lot of money on this car and I just wanna make sure that everything is ok. Is it ok?

I dunno. It's hard to diagnose with the given information. I can only suggest that you spend some quality time with your gearbox :D

You might be glad it didn't go into 2nd gear. 45 mph is close to the max allowed speed in 2nd.

Actually max speed in second is around 60mph that is in my car which is a celica gt.

You can make 45 in 1st if you take it to redline. 45 in second is chump change.

Heres my question for ya - did you clash the gear or just miss the gate? It sounds like you just couldn't hit the gate which is normal untill you get used to teh shift pattern - the gates are a lot tighter on the 6 speed than they were on your old 5 speed and the throw is a lot shorter too which takes some getting used to.

Like the other poster said - all it takes is some time...

also one hint, dont try to slam second hard - a quick but deliberate downshift into second on this gearbox is much more effective. if you just yank hard back and to the left you'll hit the gate between 2nd anf 4th every time, and if you really yank hard left you can blow past second towards reverse.

Either way G/L and enjoy yer new car - its awsome :)
