6th gen Celica. Trust me, you'll enjoy it far more than a Civic. Plus, they don't have the reliability problems of the 7th gens.

A civic is still a good choice, with better economy.

You may want to look at the previous gen altima's say 99-01, they were 4 cylinder and drove pretty nice and comfy for a commuter car.

older civic, camry, corolla, etc etc. Basically any cheap Honda or Toyota will last many miles as long as you keep up regular maintenance and not dog it

My previous car was a 6th gen celica, extremely reliable, never let me down and still looks ALOT better then your average civic.

my mom sued nissan because of the faulty airbags on them, messed up her neck pretty bad. got a ton of money in the end

any civic or rolla will save you dough.

what about a geo metro, you will be the envy of the office.

Or just buy a bike and take lessons to drive it.

a bike is also a great idea, totally slipped my mind. 50+ mpg!, who doesn't want that? plus used bikes are very cheap.

get a used civic, do a b18c1 swap or a k20z1 swap if you can afford it.

corolla is nice for gas mileage but really boring to drive, even a stock Civic is a ton more fun.
