Hello,

I have Celica 2001 GTS auto. I'm having a problem with the back door and the supporters, which should keep the door up when opened. Especially during the cold weather, the supporters totally loose their strength and are not capable of holding the back door in position. The door slides down and closes. This is very annoying and makes it impossible to load/unload the trunk.

I contacted my dealer's service department (in Dallas Metroplex area) and the response I got was that supporters can't hold the door, because I have a spoiler, and Toyota does not make any stronger supporters for Celica(?). I think this is a pretty bad explanation considering that it's the standard spoiler and it was part of the package when I purchased the car.

I'm wondering if the explanation I got from the dealrship is really true. Do other owners have similar issue with their Celica or am I just having malfunctioning supporters in my car?

Thanks for your relpys

sounds like B.S.

I suggest you bring the car in and show them the problem. If they stick with the same excuse call Toyota directly or try another dealer...

That's BS... something is wrong with the parts that hold up the trunk (I don't know what they are called). Call another dealership or ask to speak to the Service manager. It should all be covered under warranty. Tell them you want to replace those parts. This is the first time I have heard that any one has had trouble with the trunk staying open. It is definately not your stock spoiler that is causing the problem.

I used to have problems with my windows leaking really bad... they told me that it was normal and that there was nothing that could be done. The seats got really wet and the side bolsters have water stains on them from going to the car wash. Stupid techs had to take my celica into the wash bay to test it themselves. When they did they were practically on their knees appologizing for not believing me. They replaced the weather stripping.... I hate their service sometimes...

I can tell you only what happened in Europe concerning the supporters.
Most of the Celica's with a hoodspoiler had the exact same problem you have. We found out that the Celica's who came without spoilers had smaller supporters then the Celica's who come from the factory with a hoodspoiler. ( That we found in the manual of the dealers ).

We checked our supporters and it showed we all had the light ones. All the Celica's delivered before june 2001 had that problem. We contacted Toyota about it and they agreed to change the supporters under warranty. But only by the Celica's who were ordered with the spoiler.

Saying Toyota does not have heavier supporters is bulls**t. I can give you the partnumber if you want to.

If you let the dealer change the supporters tell them to be very careful. My dealer meseed up and ended up repairing my car for over $ 3000.00. (They messed up the paint on the inside of the hood).

If you have an aftermarket spoiler they can change the supporters for you, but you will have to pay for it.

I have a copy of the letter from Toyota to all the dealers telling them to change them under warranty, but the letter is in Dutch....

Good luck

No problems here with my TRD style wing on my 00 Celica. All stays up good. Must be that cheap light fiberglass ::smirks::

Go get that trunk supporter fixed. It is one of those recall things on the celica. My trunk never stayed open even with the stock spoiler, and they fixed it for me. It is TOYOTA'S RESPONSIBILITY to fix that supporter. If you want a reference, I got mine fixed from the place I bought my celica which was at Hayward Toyota in Northern California.

yeah its warranty coverage on a stock spoiler.. but when you add weight to the hatch they are gonna say thats what caused it to happen..perty simple..

The struts holding the trunk/boot on the Celicas are the wrong parts, we had the same problem, basically they are fine for non spoiler celicas but not strong enough for the ones with the spoiler. Its a common problem, its been mentioned on here lots of times. We got ours replaced free, under warranty and when we were getting them changed we were told of other people getting the same problems. There are stronger struts available that should have been fitted to start with.

Dont get ripped off, warranty should cover it, it did for us!

i ordered factory trd wing (the tall one) and when i opened all the boxes, there was a fitting kit which had stronger struts (supporters). in Aust. we get a wing standard, but the larger wing comes with tougher struts, so ur getting ripped if u believe him. toyoat does make em;)
