View Full Version : Why i'm staying with the celica....

Ok, there have been a lot of people complaining about our car...lack of aftermarket, bad dealership experiences, etc. A lot of people have been giving the turbo guys cr*p, saying if you want a turbo car, go buy a WRX. Here is my justification for keeping the celica:
1. Reliability. The toyota name says it all.
2. The looks. Nothing else looks remotely as nice, unless you go up $10K.
3. The handling. I've driven a WRX, and it feels loose and heavy compared to the celica.
4. The braking. I've only got a GT, but the brakes are CRAZY!
5. The weight. We have an advantage over virtually every other car on the market. i was looking at some eclipse mod pages for a friend of mine, and they are stating $3000 for about 300hp in an eclipse. Compare that to the $3000-4000 for a turbo for the celica GT. at 240hp, you're approaching the same power/weight ratio as an eclipse with 300hp. (roughly). It may be a *little* more expensive, but not significantly. And for another $3300, you can have your engine prepped to handle at least 300hp. Theres not much of anything that will beat a 300hp 2500lb car. Just food for thought.

i'm not too sure about reliability of the 7th gen celicas..

the thing about the subaru's handeling...i drove it and my friedn has one and your rigth...it is heavy and it does kinda float in turns on regular roads and stufff but if you really learn how to drive it especially on a race track..learn how toi get that car into a controlled four wheel drift and it is vertually unbeatable on the track...

Yep, 7th Generation Celica is the most reliable in it's class... I can't think of any major problems that affect drivability for the Celica... Only problems I can think of are some ratteling, headlight gets some condensation, belt tensioner, that's about it... Nothing like, let's say the airbag deplys for no reason (Focus) , throttle stays open (Focus SVT), engine catches on fire because air intake was designed bad (Jeep Cherokee), ect, ect...

I love it how "reliability" becomes an issue with people that have a belt tensioner issue or just beat the hell outta their car.

I am keeping my Celica for alot of the same reasons.

Not being bloated is a huge reason.

This car is just a great ALL around performer......

i love my celica too ... i wouldn't want to trade ... only wish there was a little bit more interior space ... but that just means less people for me to drive around and maybe i would like gts engine ... hehe =)

true, the wrx probably has more control, and more grip than the celica. (ok, theres not "probably" about it), but i just like the way the celica drives. i can't just toss the wrx around corners like i can the celica. but hey, just my thoughts....

Well the only reason I 'm keeping my Celica is because I cant afford another car:D

I love this thread.....

I'm love my Celica even more so. So far this week, I've gotten about 6 compliments from various people.

And 3 of them were from people in their 50s. :D

Makes ya feel good....

Based on the records of 6th gen Celicas, which are EXTREMELY different. The old Celica had the Camry 4-banger 5S-FE (on the GT), so of course it's gonna last forever, but its performance was waaaaaay behind most other sport coupes. The 7th gen is still relatively new and not many 2ZZ cars have very high mileage yet (if any at all), but if I had to estimate the life of this engine, I'd say you'll generally see it going to 140k miles before it becomes time to give the engine a good look and overhaul, which is comparable to most factory turbo engines. The 2ZZ is a high performance 4-banger, just like a turbo 4-banger is, which means it's working pretty hard to make its maximum power.

Now the 7th gen GT guys, well, they'll be driving an oil change car up to 200k+ miles with good maintainence. After all, the 1ZZ is the Corolla engine.

This is for stock cars, properly maintained, and driven like they're designed to be driven, which most importantly means that the 2ZZ is taken into lift regularly, not pampered all its life, but not excessively driven to its complete limit at every stop light.

IMO... i think the celica is a TOYOTA celica. you cant and wont find anything better.

i wish mine would have been reliable :( (currently in the shop for a couple of days getting that new wonderful 2002 transmission after only about 28k miles, and tons of other stuff i need to bring it in for).

ROTFL..It happened again..

This time some 10 year old kids were crossing the street, and and all three of them (even the one on the bike) practically stopped in the middle of the road to look at my car.

I didn't know what to do, it was kinda embarassing, so I just revved at them and waved.

They freaked out when I revved at them. :D

They were only like 8 feet away from me..heheh. :gap:

Read this:

Go to "More Info" , then select Consumer ratings and reviews.

You will see how much more reliable previous generations Celicas are.

reliability? pssshhhhhh :( ....... this is not my definition of reliable: weird sounds coming every which way... came with the stock speaker blown out

i like the handling and everything, but seriously i am really doubting the reliability rite about now.. but i cant do anything about it besides complain to dealer.... no money to change cars..

try paying 20k and finding out ur car has the build quality of a kia.... hopefully the rest of u dont have my problems tho...

I only have a GT, but I think this is the car for me. I think after we start slapping turbos on our Celis, we'll be running circles around some of the other imports. Patience is the key here, even if you have been waiting for 3 years.

My Celi is at 32,000 miles.... I haven't had any problems..EXCEPT for the belt tensioner..which was replaced free of charge at 20,000.

The rest has been my fault (like burning the clutch all to hell at 20,000) :D

I love my car...today was a great day with it!

There seems to be a great deal of different batches of Celicas which have problems. All of the most recent models, late 2001 and 2002 models seem to have vastly improved build quality over the previous 2000 and early 2001 models, dunno why. Maybe they've discovered something in the chassis? Anyways, my friend has a 2002 GT and he's working on it and put some massive subs, and his stuff hasn't started rattling one bit yet. Every bit of sound as it was the second it rolled off the lot.

I've had subs in my car from day one (thats almost 3 years) and i don't have ANY rattles. Of course, the bolts on my spoiler came loose, and it almost fell off. And my dome light flickers on/off now. But its a small price to pay. :) That and my shifter squeaking have been the ONLY problems i've had.

Welps..I dunno about that one..but every first run has problems.

Mine is a 2000 model year...and the only thing that I think was bad is the belt tensioner, like I said earlier.

Everything else is sweet...

Love the car, but can anyone say RX-8! That is of course if I have that kind of money by then.
