My boss is a big GM guy and owns a '96 GS Corvette. He says that LT4 Vettes had the strongest motors, but they underrated them because the ZR-1 was only making 405 hp. Any ass can make that much power with a supercharger. Stock LT4 Vettes are putting down around 340 wheel hp.

Looks like Ford did underrate the Cobra for it to put down that much power. Are there really only going to be 10,000 of the new Cobras though?

Problem is, they'll probably cost as much as the Z06, which will put down the same power...

I actualy like it but the seats are the worst in any car. Ive read this in every magazine and have witnessed it myself. For 35K the interior is so bad I want to vomit when I see it. But if I was spending under 30-40 for fast car I would get this. It ran 4.5 to sixty and 12.9 in Car and Driver Ragazine. They also said it handles better than any previous mustang. I give a lot of respect to Ford now after this Cobra and the Focus SVT. I think SVT is a great tuner and one of the only good things about Ford. Every SVT vehicle from the Focus to the contour(which is gone I know) have been very good cars IMO. The contour SVT was very nice when I test drove it but the inteior was almost as bad as the mustangs. Its a great car the Cobra now I dont think anyone can argue that.

I just finished reading my Car and Driver with the new Cobra on the cover....1/4 mile in 12.9! I love that power curve - it NEVER falls below 300 ft/lbs of torque. They managed to get a 5-60 'street start' (clutch already engaged, just push the gas) time of 4.9, and a clutch ripping 0-60 of 4.5!
I'll admit that I generally am no longer a Mustang guy, but you gotta respect that effort - and yes MSRP is $35,000 (not including probable dealer markup). I also like the top speed in gear chart - 50 MPH in first, 75 in second, and over 100 in third.
Stock for stock, it outperfoms the standard Corvette in acceleration, and if my memory serves correctly, it posted better skid pad numbers also. Only in braking did it slip behind the Vette. Would I buy one over the Vette? Not a chance! I prefer the 'cockpit' feel and styling (ala Celica) of the Vette much more, but for those of you who like to magazine race, this is an exceptional effort by Ford that cannot be ignored.
I applaud Ford for giving the true Mustang enthusiast what they really wanted. When the latest generation of Mustang appeared in 1994, I can remember the comments made by Ford that they were trying to model the Mustang driving experience after the BMW 3-series. There are (2) major flaws with that thinking- #1 True Mustang enthusiasts always valued acceleration over refinement, and #2, (sorry Chui) this is Ford for God's sake! This is the same company that gave us the Pinto, Fairmont, & Tempo! It is nice to see Ford finally reward the Mustang enthusiasts who stuck with Ford during the '90s when GMs LT1s and LS1s were handing them there arse on a regular basis.
Ford, this Bud is for you!

I hear ya. Mustang buffs have been asking for more power for many many years now and finally when GM puts the lights out on the F-bodies, they finally do it. Oh well, at leats it happened.

well its about damned time but still man.. 35,000 for that?? if this wasnt the last year of an F-body you could pick up a Camaro Z28 for around 23,000.. thats 12,000 less and its putting down close to the same #s and can run the 1/4 in just bout same time..

Z28's compete with the GT
Cobra's compete with the WS6's..which cost ~$32k msrp
cobra's 35k msrp, and has an independent rear suspension..may outhandle the WS6 as well..we'll see
will destroy one in the quartermile, thats for damned sure with these type of numbers.. trapping 110+

uhm, my friends bone stock 6spd ws6 ran 13.1 @ 109 about a month ago in Florida in 80 degree heat.. so dont underestimate the LS1..
and yes the WS6 is 32k but the Camaro SS was only 26k and it handles every bit as well as the WS6 if Im not mistaken and will run just as fast..

little by little SVT is starting to hire smart young engineers..

How'd I miss THIS one LOL! :D
"A" for effort Dave, but I ain't trading my WS6 anytime soon. Why? For me it's rarity - I have one of only 11 WS6 Formulas in Canada for '98...one of less than 600! ever made in total for LS1 WS6 Formulas everywhere! With numbers like that it may even be worth something some day *L*. I actually own the damn thing now, makes it hard to get out of a car like this and into something only marginally quicker for a new big monthly payment.
With all that said, I do like the new Cobra...but dyno numbers notwithstanding, it hasn't been putting the numbers down at the track to scare LS1 owners into flocking to their nearest Blue Oval dealer. That 3700+lb weight is no doubt partly responsible for that. So nope, as nice as it is, it really doesn't make me lust after it. I'm MUCH more interested in what Ford will do with the NEXT (2004?) gen Mustang when it finally gets a (Ford's words) "world class chassis" finally. Chop 500lbs off that 3700, and keep the hp at around 400...all in a new car designed to handle it and that WILL be something to think trading about....maybe ;).

I know this is a domestic battle Dave, but what about the 350Z? I posted it on your board as well, and I just want to hear what you guys think. NISMO is supposed to be jumping on the 350Z and is going to offer a dealer installed warrantied turbo. This would probably easily put that car at about 350-380 HP with modest boost. It would still be in the price range of the cobra as well, and would weigh in at about 3100 lbs. What do you guys think is best bang for the buck?

that weight sucks, its 3680 i believe..how much is the WS6?
Evan Smith ran a 12.4 in the new Cobra..he also got a 12.9 out of the LS1..so thats best times against best times bone stock.
im still waiting on the trade for my 8.8" for your motor Bill. ;)

i believe the WS6 was more powerful than the SS, also had better brakes, but i may be mistaken..

Dave stripper Z-28's and Formulas are down as low as 3200 to 3300lbs - fully loaded SS's and WS6 T/A's are in the 3500lb range. Mine is somewhere in between.
Evan Smith car certainly drive the wheels of just about anything he gets in *L*. Add up to a half second for "regular" joes :).
...and Dave, the che...er...the motor's in the mail! :D

I willing to bet that Nissan will have a factory turbo out in short order on that car...and yes it will be sweet! Personally, I don't care if a car is import...domestic....Ford....GM....even Hyundai *G*...I just like what I like! :)

let's wait til teh cars come out first..
the new Z is drop dead gorgeus on its styling IMO..and from the looks of it, should be a very nice performer for its price. you have to consider some things though..compared to a Z the Cobra is king daddy quarter mile. i don't think the Z is intended for quarter mile racing, or built with that as its main purpose...the Cobra is starting to become an all around car, and witht his latest 03 and its completely reworked Cobra R rear suspension system, and improved binders, etc..
want an all around car witht eh import feel to it, get the Z..hell, I'd get one in a heartbeat if the financial splurge was worth it. If you're into raw, seamless torque and power, with a chasis that has over 20 years of tuning behind it, then go for the Mustang.
people tend to forget that there is a lot mroe to owning a Mustang than driving it. never downplay that issue..its why the car outsells everything else combined in this niche.
but i completely respect the new Z, and think it would be an excellent buy. but i'd rather have the blower on the motor from teh factory than as an add-on, anyday of the week.
