View Full Version : Just a couple questions (Solobarics)

I'm planning to hook up just one 10" or 12" solobaric in my trunk, and I just have a couple of questions.
1) I notice that each solobaric has a 2ohm and 4ohm version. I've looked up the technical definition of the difference but I don't understand it. How do I know which one to buy? Does it make a difference?
2) Are there major differences in the L5 and L7 versions other than the L7 being able to handle more power? The L5 is obviously cheaper, but the specs seem like they're pretty similar.
Thanks.

I'm not sure about the ohm question but I think the 2ohms suck more power than the 4ohm. There is a serious difference between the L5s and L7s. The L7s hit way harder and have better sound quality.

Thanks. So you think an L7 10" would be a better investment than an L5 12"? I'm working on a budget.

Yes for sure.

it has to do with what impedance you want to run your amp. go to http://www.kicker.com/images/manuals/SoloL7Man.pdf and scroll down and check out the wiring. An amp rated at 400 watts at 4 ohms will run 800 watts at 2, 1600 at 1, etc. You need to make sure that the amp can support 1 ohm if you run it at that. Generally, i've found you get a higher-quality sound if with a higher ohmage (is that a word?) I agree, the 10" L7 will be better than the 12" L5. But if you're working on a budget, i recommend NOT going with kicker...the JL W3's are very well priced, and hit HARD. so do the Alpine R's. I'd suggest checking out www.ikesound.com.

Hey, that actually makes sense to me. Thanks for the advice. I was planning on kicker solos just because everyone I know swears by them. Thanks for the link, this stuff is so confusing to me.

I'm not a fan of the JL's. I agree that they are awesome when new. but they tend to show their age much more than other subs.

I have a Solo Baric L5 12" 2 Ohm DVC in my trunk, and it hits pretty hard. I would recommend that you go with the L5. Think about it, do you think that you will be hitting 1000 Watts RMS with your L7? Granted it may give you louder base, is it realistic that you will be going that high? Im happy with my 12" L5, it gives me enough bass to hear it from anywhere in the neighborhood. Whatever you do, go with the 2 Ohm. Those will definately perform better than the 4 ohm.
