View Full Version : Installed LED in gas/temp LCD myself!!!

Okay everyone, I just bought a set of LEDs from Skunk Killer last week and I received it yesterday. I spent the whole night installing them and AC Reverse Indiglo gauges that I just bought also. The LEDs took about an hour because I'm a little rusty. The installation for the LEDs in the gas/temp LCD was so easy. If you ever tried installing LEDs in your cell-phone or something like that then this is like exactly the same stuff. Anyways, if you people out there that just can't wait to get it install from Skunk, I think you should just buy the LEDs from him and do it yourself. Just my opinion.

did your gauges caliberate automatically? I'm still confused about that. I thought that when you take the needles off, the car just becomes retarded.

Yea, I had a problem with the needle caliberation. Check this link where we talk about how to fix it.

Actually, you can take rubbing alcohol or something and rub off the orange on the stock gauge plate. That way, you'll let the blue pass through!

to people who never did soldering...... i suggest to don't try it yourself..... yeah maybe you'll be able to do it.... but if not and if you mess up the cluster huhhhhhhh!!!!

That's what the gauge cluster looks like when you take it apart.

Anyone near southwest missouri wanna help me out with this? I don't have the money to be messing with the gauge cluster myself but i've been wanting to do both the stock deck and the gas/temp for awhile now but I don't have the experience either...

Those blue lights look pretty sweet! We're gonna tackle this in my sister's Celica sometime in the near future...she just got the reverse indiglo gauges and wants to change the fuel LCD to blue to match. Too bad your Celica interior lights are so difficult to change, my eclipse ones were soooo much easier! http://www.club3g.com/members/tinkerbelly5/redinterior1.jpg

Thanks! I'm the little light expert over at the Eclipse site, but my sister has a Celica that she's gonna start doing some work on, and she really doesn't know too much about it yet, so I figured I'd help her out a bit! I know you guys probably don't want me over here, but I don't care! I gotta help out my sister ;)

I want this mod so bad. I'm dying to get red LCD everywhere like the eclipse but i have no experience. Can you get the tools to do it anywhere, is it that hard for a first timer, the last thing i want to do is mess up my control panel. Is Skunk killer making more rounds? Or do you think there is a dealer or shop that will install for me, so far i've visited one shop and they had no clue at all what i was talking about.

hey THE HAMMER ... on the LCD screen, are there more LED's to put on if i have an AUTOMATIC? because wouldn't there be more LED's because you hafta light up P R N D 2 L ?
TheHammer
05-19-2002, 10:04 AM
No, those are all let through by the computer of the car (there are leads to the LCD from the computer to tell which strips to light up). No more LED's are needed. Trust me, I've done a few automatics, and they work just fine and dandy.
I'm a little chicken to do this myself but I definitely want it done...
what kinda place could I go to get it done? how much? would it be better just to go ahead and do it myself? oh and Russ... how long did it take to do your deck? looks really good bro..

hey hammer, did you figure out the clock and A/C console to blue yet?

05-19-2002, 12:21 PM
wheres the cheapest place to buy enough red LEDs for the gas/temp gauge, speedo/tach, and needles? $40 sounds like too much to me. maybe worth it for blue ones, but definitely not red.

I've actually bought some leaded 12V blue led's off ebay from a guy named jerry, and replaced the cig lighter and climate control lamps with these led's, seemed to work pretty good. The clock, I am still working on though.
