sorry for this repost, i know i posted this question up a while back... the main response i got was
"you could get the gearbox to fit but you wouldnt have the electronics to pull it off"
but after reading many posts i keep coming across the statement "anything can be done with enough $$$"
so.. considering a FI 4sp auto gts is as fast as a 6sp manual NA.. i really really would like to look into swapping in a 6sp auto MRS gearbox into my GTS...
NO manual is not an option!!
my big question is.. how much would this cost? who would be able to help me out with this conversion?? you WILL be surprised at how much i am willing to commit to this project...
kind regards
Sam
PS - MRS = 1zz-ge engine comes with(option) 6sp auto tiptronic gearbox
GTS = 2zz-ge engine comes with (option) crappy 4sp auto tiptronic gearbox

You should read up on the "auto" mrs gearbox from the MRS SMG. Its actually a 6 speed manual with a manumatic shifter. From what I remember, you can actually buy the manumatic "sequential" gear selector from toyota along with the sensors and wiring harness and its not an easy swap. Some cosmetic things you will need to buy is the entire gear selector mechanism, and the steering wheel with the gear selector.
Its a nifty idea, but a lot of people dismiss its novelty as they found that the 0-60 times on a SMG and non-SMG MRS were about 1 sec apart. Apparently the SMG takes time to shift up as it waits for the idler gear to syncronize.

It hasn't been done yet, but lilrocketspyder is in the process of attempting the first one. He is literally working on the harness last night and today. Hes using a 6speed SMT out of an 03 Spyder and a 03+ 2ZZ w/ DBW TB
Its not an auto tranny though - its a SMT - a manual tranny that is shifted and has the clutch operated by computer.

I've heard you can't even launch with that tranny.

If it's already a custom project, you might want to se if anyone has devised any clever mods to get the thing to shift faster. I too have thought about this as an interesting (and I imagine expensive!) project. Good luck -- keep us posted :)
EDIT: ANyone happen to know the gear ratios for the MR-S SMG?

Aren't there 5 spd & 6 spd auto lexus trannys that might be an option to swap?
I've been briefly thinking about this myself but custom sh!t gets WAY expensive & I have no clue what would go into getting the electronics setup right with something like this.... :D

As a matter of fact littlerocket has figured out how to make it upshift withotu lifting as fast as it does if you lift :D
