for your budget the sumitomo HTR Z ll would be a good tire and won't wear to fast they are on special at tirerack for 82 bux each.
The stock tires are pretty good if you cna get another set of those.
Potenza RE730s are good too and are 106 a tire at tirerack.
The kumho supra 712s will wear very well and aren't the stickest but they are good tires.
the dunlop sp sport FM901 are supposed to do awesome according to dunlop but i haven't heard any independpent reviews on them or anything you can ask sacha about those.

I've got the RE730s now and can't warn people enough about them. These are the noiseiest tires I've ever driven on in ANY vehicle. They make my snow tires seem quiet. I'd put up with it if it wasn't for the fact that they don't handle in the dry as well as the stock Yoks and are basically undriveable in the wet.

RE730's are noisier than truck tires. Stay away (agrees with Phil C). There are actually many options in 205/50-16 size.

You coudl try Falken Azeins, I have heard they have good dry grip. Equal to or better than the stock tires.

I've got the Falken Azenis RS on my Celica right now, and they grip much better than stock. But don't expect them to last long, they wear like crazy since they are so soft. I got them for $80/tire from my friend.

There is going to be a recall for the RE730 according to tirerack because they are so loud.

phewl good thing i asked.. was gonna look for those RE730.. but i guess not anymore.. so far my list is:
Kumho Ecsta 712 about $78 [heard needs break in]
Yoko A520 / AVS intermediate about $80
Dunlop .. i saw an ad saying: VR16 SP2000 for $85
Any more ratings on tires? thanks guys!!
i'm in for stock grip on dry + good grip on wet surface...(never in snow)... thats all. and tread wear can be about the same.

Will it fit on the stock GT-S wheel?

Sure, it'll fit, but I'm not sure any gains you get are worth the loss in gearing.

I just picked up the Kumo 712's, and so far I like them, very quiet and nice grip, have not tried them in the rain yet.

Traction /Stabability:
Dry: 9
Wet: 8

you said it! MUCH louder than the oft-criticized A520s.
Even noise aside, I HATED the RE730s.

Does 195/40/16 or 195/45 work on the stock GT-S alloys? I know that it will read faster on the odometer, but just wanted to know if these would fit. Thanks

Depends what you mean by "work."
They'll fit on the wheel, but why would you want them?

I was just wondering, so the best size to go for a GT-S replacement would be like 205/40 or 45/16, assuming you don't really care about odometer readings?

Again, "best" is kinda vague.
There's really nothing wrong with 205/50R16...and in fact there are a lot of good things about sticking with that size. I don't know why you'd vary from that size on the street...there's a whole range of good tires available in that size.
If you want some gains for the strip or autox, yeah, you could improve gearing and get a wider contact patch with something like a 215/40 or 215/45.

I am in the same situation... I need tires that have good dry/wet traction and will perform well in the winter (SE Ohio)... please help. Right now I'm looking at the Goodyear Eagle HP's and the Falken Zien's.... need to buy ASAP.

If you mean Falken Ziex, then don't touch them.
I bought a set for my Celica in 205/50 R16 and have regretted it from day 1!
No grip in the dry OR wet. The car is virtually undrivable in the wet - as soon as you hit lift they spin uncontrollably.
Falken Ziex:bang:
Apparently the Falken Azenis are quite good, however.

I have Azenis on my 15" K-1 Racing rims for Auto X and they grip awesomw. The are well worth the money also. I have Dunlop SP 9000 on my stock GTS rims now and they are also excellent but out of your price range. They go for 134 on sale at the tire rack. I also got the 205/50/ZR16 stock size.

For High Performance All-Season, I'm thinking about Dunlop SP Sport A2 - Size 205/55HR16. The ratings and reviews on TireRack look good. They would be a bit bigger than stock, but I am not worried about the slight gearing change.
For non-snow tires, the Kumho Ecsta 712 is quite good. There are not a lot of choices in 205/50-16.

I had blowout lastnight during the snowstorm here in DC. I had the stock Yokohoma A680 type tires on it. I'm debating whether to get the same type of tires again, they worked well for me, or get another brand of tires. Any suggestions would be welcome. NTB has suggested the Yokohama A550V for my car.
I have 22k miles on a set of 205/50/16 Kuhmo Ecsta 712s. They're about 90% as good as the stock Yoko A680s in the dry, and they're GREAT in the rain. I've even driven them with about 1" of snow on the road and they did ok then too. They do need to be broken in for a couple thousand miles before they perform best, and they last about 50% longer than the stock tires too!
I actually won my class at an autocross event driving on the 712s in the rain, beating out several drivers on full tread race tires. I'm not too sure about other tires under $100 each, though the Falken Azenis Sport tires offer outstanding dry performance.
