has anyone have had this problem???? people says its the head gasket...2Gs for toyota to find prob and not including if the warranty will cover the cost to fix it anhd then i got to pay to have them put the engine back together...a lot of money i could b putting to make it nicer looking/faster.
love my car to death but will need to get rid of it if it doesnt get fixed...dont want engine to bow...ouch

I have the same problem with my 2000 gts, although it goes through a little less oil I would say a quart every 3weeks. The only way to fix this would be to replace the piston rings or get a whole new engine< either way if you are out of warranty would be very expensive. Just keep it filled!! I think that the previous owner of my car didnt realize its oil consumption problem and drove it with low oil which weakend the rod bearings enough that they conveniantly went out on me.
If it's an '01 GT..probably better off just getting a junked 'rolla engine...
Switch over to a High Mileage oil of your choice to cut your consumption... so far... it's been working on my daughter's GT... but hers never blew smoke... and it's a white one... so you'd definitely see the soot marks if it did..

Until you can fix it with used engine or short block do the oil 2way said.Check the pcv valve and both hoses coming off the valve cover, clean with carb cleaner if needed.Due to burning that much oil it will have a lot of carbon build up which only makes things worst.Seafoam the intake, but dont over do it because it would be easy to over heat the converter. Also change the coolant(check info about bleeding system) and wash out the radiator inside and outside with water if it hasnt been serviced for a while.

My 2000 GT was going through 3 quarts in 500 miles. Same issue as you with the black crap coming out of the back. Do you have little black speckles/soot on your bumper?
My short block was fried. The piston rings were warped. Thankfully I was still under warranty by 3000 miles and I got a new short block for free. Otherwise it was going to cost about $2500. I had this done about 10 months ago. Now I'm not leaking oil at all.
I know of a bunch of 2000 GTs with this problem and as long as you have a warranty, they will fix it. They will do an oil consumption test to see how much you are going through.

Immediately switch to a high mileage oil.... or start adding it to fill your loss.. I used Castrol's on my daughter's GT... she went from losing almost 2 qts every oil change (2.5-3K miles) to 1/4 qt added so far... and she should now be due for a change.

Same, I too was using a crazy amount of fully synth, use high mileage oil, this will help drastically lower the consumption.

I would stay the hell away from a used 1ZZ engine to fix oil consumption problems - get a new shortblock.
get a new shortblock.
True, Boosted2.0... but it seems quite a # of members have opted for low mileage, later model 'rolla engines (w/the newer pistons, rings, & sleeves etc.) w/o troubles... in terms of down time & ease... isn't just easier to do a swap?
While I know my daughter's is on an extended warranty..... if I had to do something w/hers out of warranty... I'd opt for a whole other engine & valvetrain... rather than putting the tired head on a new shortblock.

Depends really - if it never ran out of oil the heads don't get very "tired" per se. I also don't ever use a used motor without going through it so for my own car I'd rather go with a new botom end.
But yeah - getting an 03+ 1ZZ will get you out of the danger zone for used motors, the issue is just that what the junkyard claims is an 03 isn't always an 03....

Thank you for the affirmation... and yes....that can be so, unfortunately, true for some salvage yards.:(

MyCelica01, what's the mileage on you car? Excessive oil consumption should be covered under Toyota's powertrain warranty.
Whats so special about the 03 1ZZ engines?
