What is it that's different btw the 2? Don't other companies make exhausts that fit both?

Different exhaust piping diameters.

Certain exhaust systems are car (type/model specific) In this case GTS is only for the GTS and same goes for the GT... Sometimes a custom job is required for certain exhausts sytems... Why you may ask is this required - The exhaust that needs custom piping is either for another car, a generic one or some people just want a straight pipe... Well I hope that helps...

No, that didn't help. I know that the exhausts TRD makes for the Celica are different btw GT and GT-S. I'm also pretty certain that other companies make exhausts that work for either car.
So, my question is why won't the GT-S exhaust fit the GT? or is the real problem that the GT-S exhaust wasn't tuned for the GT, and therefore won't "work"? What is it that makes it "not fit," as a couple have said? I've owned and been under both cars...everything looks pretty identical.

it will work, just take it to a custom exhaust place to get it fitted, may cost a bit extra, but im sure they will come up with something to make it fit. Just call around places first and talk to experts to make sure it can be done. Thats all the advise i can give you.

ok, let me try one last time.
I don't want to put a TRD GT-S exhaust on my GT. However, I'm curious about what the difference is between the 2 TRD exhausts.
I'm looking at the shop manual. everything back to the rear wheels is the same for 1ZZ vs. 2ZZ. Then, 2 different "tailpipe" assemblies are shown (not really just a tailpipe, but actually everything from the rear wheels back). Both the 1ZZ and the 2ZZ assembly attach to the same pipe/flange that comes of the cat. Both appear to use the same O-Ring hangers in the same location. So I can't see how one TRD exhaust would fit one car but not the other. The 2ZZ might not work well with the 1ZZ, and vice-versa, but fitment shouldn't be a problem from what I see.
What I'm really wondering is if there are any pitfalls associated with putting a custom straight pipe fabricated to fit a GT-S (using all stock mounting points) onto a GT.
