View Full Version : Hard driving = bad gas milage??

Hey guys, this may or maynot be a dumb question.... But I just wanna know for sure weather or not driving hard (aka leadfoot, gunning it all the time or whatever) results in less than optimum gas milage. And if so, how much do you think it affects the gas milage?

well i would have to say yes because i normally get around 30mpg, last friday i let my son take the car for his prom night so i filled it before he left then filled it the next morning and it only got 23. So i am assuming he was abusing it all night.

i'm pretty sure that driving hard uses more gas.......but i know that its not enough to worry about.....unless you roam around town at 6k rpm all day...

On the Highway - I'll get 650Km per tank. In the city, aka - hard driving... I'll get 350Km per tank.

So... yes. Hard driving (livin in lift) and hard throttle (>50%) will certainly result in less than 'optimum' mileage.

if you city drive, you get liek 23 mpg. if you highway drive, you get 30+ mpg. if you city drive it hard, you get <23. if you highway drive it hard, you get 20<x<30. city driving really kills your gas mileage, it really sucks. but highway driving, its like "whoaaa i can get such good gas mileage"

More throttle = more air = more fuel needed = worse mileage :D

I get from 27-29 mpgs long drives 32mpg

That pretty well sums it up, but you left out the last part..."= more fun!!!"...;)

Well I get between 13.5 and 14.5. Doesn't seem to matter much if it's city or highway. I actually got 16.02 MPG the other day. Not sure how that happened. :D I was doing 75-80 the whole time. I've heard of people only getting like 8 MPG when they are going 120+ on the highway. Cars just burn gas so inefficiently at high speeds. Seems to be almost exponential above a certain speed.

The best gas mileage will be experienced going 55 mph on the highway. That's why during the gas crunch in the old days, that was the speed limit. When you go over 55mph, the air resistance will grow exponentially.

Better at 55? no it depends on the car and its CD and its gearing and the conditions. my celica actually did better at 70 than 55 by 3mpg. since all highways pretty much have been moved to 65 not 55 and 75 in most areas they redesigned the gearing to be better at those levels. and yes getting on a car will use more gas.. and after a certain level you get in to the cars power band (lightning) and yeah the gas milage will drop off. running in the cars optimum gas milage to power range is the best. for the celica it is around 3800 to 4400 rmp in 6th. at least it was for mine. every car has a range in the top gear that yields the best milage. once above that range the milage will drop off and below that range it is lugging and it will also drop off. just a thought..

there is this program CARTEST.EXE or something. it shows fuel effeincy related to speed. above 60mph where aerodynamics start playing a major role your fuel consumption does look exponentialy worse.

as far as hard driving.. why do you think "city" fuel effeciency is worse? because of all the stop and go. general rule.. if you keep the accelerator at a constant position, your fuel effeciency will be better than if you speed up/slow down, let alone mash the throttle when you want to speed up.

I think it was this month's Motor Trend that had fuel guzzling tests. They played with a Porsche GT2 on a track, a Lightning doing many 1/4 runs, etc. Anyway, the Lightning avg. a whopping 2.4mpg doing the 20 or so 1/4 runs. That's getting on it hard, and that's what happens to your mileage.

The reason why gas milage goes down at higher speeds has to do with "volumemetric efficency" that geos up as speed increases.

What this meas is, as RPMs increases, your engine gets more and more eficient in packing more fuel and air mixtue in its cylinders via the intake valves. This is true up to a given point (RPM), depending on the engine.

This is what`s largely responsible for the "power band" or "power curve".

Gas mileage? What's that? All I know is when it's empty, fill it up.

i normally get about 380-400 miles a tank if i'm gunning, racing or just driving hard i get about 320-340miles a tank! and thats bad for me cuz i commute with it everyday to san jose from fremont to santa clara so ineed my gas mileage and by the way i got my car on march 15th with 4 miles off the lot it now has 5506 miles in my garage

How can you tell? Do you got a LCD that tells you or something? Does S-AFC tell you how much mpg you're getting?

Being an astute father he probably checked the mileage before his son left. All he had to do the next morning was check the mileage, gas it up and figure out the fuel consumption for the evenings festivities. :)

I normally get 54 mpg highway. But the past 2 weeks, I've driving a lot harder, so I'm down to 50 mpg:whogives:

I use trip meter A to check my gas mileage. I reset it everytime I fill up, and write the mileage on my gas reciept. Then it is a simple matter of division :)

I do the same exact thing except I use Trip meter B. :)

At road courses, I burn through gas like I was drivin a v8 powered tank.

I've gone through a full tank of gas in a day of road course running *(not running ALL day, of course)*

Yeah, and running the engine at high speeds also burns gas. Me and my friends were driving at an average speed of 90 mph for an hour and the Celica drank gas. Something like 2-3 bars.

That's why there are two cam profiles in the engine. One is for optimal economy; one is for aggressive driving which uses more fuel

Same here..trip A gets reset every gas fillup and trip B is used for oil changes.

Just to cheer you guys up...

I drove a Tundra for a while. I averaged about 13MPG - my all time low was 8MPG towing a 4000 lb. boat and trailer at 85-90 mph down the Floroida's Turnpike :) Makes the Celica numbers look downright awsome don't it :)

It depends on how you drive too. I'll run out a gear before I shift. I won't neccesarily be hard on the gas, but i'll run it out. That'll use more gas. However, when I'm doing highway driving, the faster I go, the better my milage. For example, goign back and forth to work in my M3, I average 21.3 mpg. Coming back from Boston this weekend, I averaged 26.4. But that was doing a constant 85-90. Work is a constant 65-0. But again, I'll hold 4th gear longer, to give it some more balls for a pass, etc.
