I just bought my GTS two weeks ago and am about to purchase an intake for it. My main concern is what will happen if the CEL goes on! I had a 99 SI, and i know on the Hondas, when the CEL would go on, the timing will retard and the engine will run rich as a safety measure. Does anything like this happen on the toyotas? Also, how much hp would a short ram intake add?

Nothing happens if u have a CEL, The CEL light is only there to warn/give u precaution. If you're getting a short ram, well it depends what type of brand and how much hp you'll get but uhhh I would say it's not that much difference with the different short rams when it comes to hp gains.

The main reasons you would get a CEL with a CAI are either an intake leak (ie a cracked CAI or loose clamp) or if you over-oil the filter and it coats the element in the MAF. If you oil the filter only VERY lightly and thoroughly inspect the parts you install and take care in their installation you should be fine. If the CEL does come on later because oil coats the MAF hotwire you will loose some performance because the ECU won't have an accurate reading of how much air is entering the engine, but thats all - a lean code won't set the system into any kind of default mode or anything. And checking you intake regularly and cleaning the MAF element with a zero residue cleaner if it gets oily will help prevent these problems from happening.

Don't listen to this guy - if the CEL comes on there is or was something wrong. Period.

i'm with griffin on this.. if you get a CEL then there was a problem that tripped the circuit.. which for many of the codes by the way is a double fault trip mechanisms.. which means its gotta happen twice for it to give you the light.

Uhh duh, he said what is the possibility that he would get a CEL if he bought and installed an intake.

yeah - to which you responded not to worry about it, the CEL is only a warning.... which isnt necessarily true. Don't take it personal bud - not trying to slam you - I just don't want this guy thinking that if the CEL comes on later to ignore it just because he has a CAI is all.

Anyways I did answer his question - scroll up and read it.

Thanks everybody for all the info! I'll probably be getting an "ebay" short ram intake soon... since i'm pretty tight on cash.
