ok while i was winning the IDRC this weekend (quick plug for me) i came across a thought. In the supra when i turn up the boost too high, i run into a situation called "blowing out the spark" the stock ignition system just cant make enough spark at high boost levels. So most Supra owners get a DLI which basically increases the power of the ignition.

So the point of this thread is, when will we celicas begin to run into this situation? I dont think anyone has run into this yet. If so please let me know.

we have individual coil packs. its alot more effective at delivering a good spark. I dont know if we will ever see this anytime before like 600whp

XS Engineering has their ignition power pack that cranks the spark voltage up to 20V and holds near that voltage @ 20A even if the cars voltage drops to under 12V.

Yep - Supras run only 3 coils to service 6 holes - the Celica has 4 coils which gives you a lot more freedom to build a good spark with higher dwell. I don't think anyone is having problems with the stock system.

Spark is fine so far with stock ignition at over 30psi. The only reason we've tried different coils has been to be able to run an ignition box but we found no advantage to that and it ends up being a complex setup.

just the answers im looking for...XS can kiss my A$$!!! I will never ever, ever, ever use any product with any association to XS Engineering... Yes i know AEM has the CDI and HKS has the DLI...So it seems that the Supra has a weaker ignition system over the Celica... +1 Celica

Supra is older technology. For Toyota to have added individual coils they either a) would have had to do it from the start in 1993. or b) totally reworked the ignition and electrical system.

Neither happened.

And generally speaking the Supra's ignition system is actually really strong for being a stock system. You're running what 20psi before it says no more? That's very good for no modifications to the ignition. Hondas usually have to upgrade ignition first. Then make power second. ;)

True - its just that so many of Toyota's ignition systems are good even above 20 PSI (like the 1ZZ & 2ZZ and the 3S-GTE - all of em hang tough even to 30 PSI)

the MKIV TT does have 6 coils (one for each) but i found out the problem. it was actually in my tuning. there was a fuel cut at 19psi. once i fixed it. 24 psi baby!!! im making pretty close to 575-600HP Supra is scary fast
