i believe on the second generation airbags, the velocity of the seat movement is recorded in a crash to determine the speed of the airbag..
BUT..
im prob wrong on that, but the seat does play a part in it..

From what I know of airbags, as soon as the airbag light is on the whole system is disabled. You have to go to a dealer for them to reset it.

damn that sux because i wanted to get torinos. i don't want to do it if my front airbags won't still work.

Pull the negative terminal off yer battery and let it chill for 5 minutes so the caps in the Airbag ECU can discharge then re-hook it. The airbag light should go away and everything be back to normal. If that doesnt work you'll have to take it to the dealership to get reset. It takes like 2 minutes if the tech knows what hes doing.

the same thing happened to me. and pulling batt cable wont work. you have to get it reset at the dealer. my dealer wanted to charge my 40 bucks to do it so i told them to screw off. and guess what, my A/B light is still blinking:)

i unplugged the plugs under the seat(to make the seatbelt guy go away) and had a wreck in my first celica. bags didn't pop because of that, so take that as you will. even if the lights not on, the plugs under there will still disable it.

IMO, I wouldnt trade my airbags for seats.....even though they look good, but then again, I only have front a/b , but like joker said, even to get rid of the little seatbelt guy is risky....

not if u do it right. you can unplug it. you have to cut one of the wires to get rid of the seat belt guy. ill see if i can fine out what wire it is. the other is for the airbags.

The Joker is correct. Modifications involving either the side air bags or the seat belt switches could result in the supplemental restraint system, air bags and seat belt pre-tensioners, becoming non-functional!
Please decide if that result is acceptable prior to performing modifications.
My examination of the Toyota manuals confirmed my expectations. They do NOT provide the information you require. They will probably NOT provide the information on request either.
All that being said, it is POSSIBLE that the side air bags may be removed while maintaining functionality of the SRS. These modifications require electrical and electronic experience.

Sorry to bring this back up but i was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have the side impact airbags and want to replace my leather seat covers with custom leather seat covers. The new covers are for seats without the side impact. - I think. I dont know if I can use them. Anyone have any info on this? Can I use these, is there a trick?

Im sure there's a simple walk around for the wiring of the plug for the seats...Im sure its like just grounding one wire or somthing like that....Im sure someone will find out..

I've had my seats disconected for almost 2 years now and I had no clue that it effects the air bag use. I don't have any suggestions for what wire to cut under the seat to get rid of the seat belt guy ... I was thinking why not keep it plugged in and find out what wire it is at the clock and cut that to get rid of that seat belt guy and then we can all deal with the seat belt guy on the gauge cluster.. dealing with one blinking seat belt guy is definetly better than dealing with 2 or since this obviously struck a nerve with all of us knowing we aren't being as safe as we thought we were maybe we should wear are seat belt .... as far as buying after markt seats I'm sure there is a way I'm just not sure how

omg...you brought up a 2 year old thread....I don't think there's a way to get around the a/b light, I always thought it would have to be reset by the dealer. Getting it reset at the dealer is not that expensive man, I mean, $40-50 vs injury?

The side impact air bags are just bolted on the stock seats - I say take them off and put them on the new seats. I've taken my seat out many times, as long as you disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging the seat, and plug the bags back in before reconecting the battery there's no problem.

no no no. you are misunderstanding. i have the seats with side airbags on my carbon blue car and i took out the whole seat and put it in my silver car which i am keeping. i could care less if the carbon blue car doesnt have side airbags, i just care about selling it with the airbag light flashing.

I've had my seats for a year and half now. And yes the airbag light has been a problem. Trust me it was definately scary to know that everytime that I drove, I knew that the the bags wouldn't deploy. So I did some research. If i remember correctly about 7 months ago i took the plug using a 10ohm resistor in the plug and then had my good friends at Toyota reset it for me. Does wonders and the light is gone and SUPPOSEDLY the bags work! :-D but yea if they charge you go to a differnt dealership where there aren't too many modded cars and use the situation to your advantage! They are usually pretty cool about helping you out if you give them a tour of your car :gap: Hope that helps!

Do ya have to disconnect the seat wire if ya want to take off the covers for the cloth seats? I'm expecting that I'll want to wash my covers bout twice a year and I don't want to have to go the dealer to get the airbag system reset each time. That would be a pain in the a...

are you using the seats for off-road racing and looks. if so then yeah i would get those too cuz sparco seats look so cool. but if you do some street racing or speeding then good luck man... my friend totalled his gts and he is lucky he survived. he was doing 200km/h on a 90km/h zone, the car flipped over 5 times and everywhere on his car is dented, from front to side to rear to roof.. and none of the 3 airbgs deployed... but he lived to see tomorrow's sun... toyota sux at airbags and he is just lucky... but anyway i'm getting wayy off topic, i agree with people who say that take it to toyota dealer and re-activate the airbag and ask them if those seats are compatible with toyota airbag system, cuz i wanted to get sparcos someday also. good luck~

Chris,
let me check the resistors i bought, but i believe what i did was measure the resistance between the 2 wires while the airbag was still pluged in. you should get a reading of about 5 ohms. you can goto radio shack and buy a pack of 10ohm 1/2 watt resistors. tie 2 of them together(in parallel, + to + and - to -) and find a way to jump the 2 wires. I used 2 in-line crimps to do the job. make sure you unplug the battery while you're doing this. when you start the car, make sure the beeping stops before you crank the car. also make sure you start the car in one crank otherwise, the air bag light will come on.

did you have the numbers right?? i put 2 10ohm 1/2 watt resistors in parallel over the wires, reset the ecu, and turned it on like you said and it still flashes. any pics?

I'm kinda weary of wash'n both whole seats. I washed the seats on my old car, an '84 'rolla, and it took a good 4 days for the seats to dry. I had to barrow my parents car. It sucked. That was like 10 yrs ago. Have bissel type washers got'n better at suck'n the water out of car seat foam now?

Hi guys I'm new here...
I have the airbag light problem too on my 02 GTS w/ side air bags since I've been taking the fr. passenger seat out/in for racing. In the above quote did the guy mean to say "airbag guy" instead of "seatbelt guy" b/c that's a big difference. I used to have both the seatbelt guy (I use a harness w/ cage) and the airbag guy, but now I only have the airbag guy since I disconnected the seatbelt warning light. Was that ok? But my airbags still won't work? So what is the final solution having to do with resistors? Can this be a permanent safety link somewhere on the site b/c it's a very important safety issue and anyone into racing will have to deal with it at some time. Thanks.

Pete,
Sorry it took so long to post, I don't always look nc.org. Anyways, I just took 2 10ohm (1/2 watt) resistors and tied them in parallel and tapped them into the stock wiring harness and it turned of the light when i started the car.
BTW - I did talk to a TRD tech about this as I was ready to get a set of the TRD seats, but was worried about the side air bag. They told me this is how they would do it on their race prep cars. I then decided to get sparce instead of trd cause i like the material more.
happy it worked for you.
