Hey everyone!
Nice forum you guys have here. I am not a Celica owner, but I am a serious import freak. Anyways, I live in Philly and I have two cars. My daily driver/beater is my 2000 Infiniti G20t and my project car is a 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage LS. Pics below.
My problem: My little brother has a 2000 GT and his motor just blew. The mechanic says that the timing chain jumped/skipped a tooth and cause massive internal damage. I am trying to research to find out if any year 1zz motor will swap in no problem.... The mechanic is quoting him $2,300 just for the motor plus 2,000 install for a grand total of about $4300. I went on car-part.com and found a few GT motors in the northeast for around $1,300, but none of them are from a 2000, they are all 01,02,03,04. Will these fit with no problem? Also, I called about one in RI and the guy said the intake manifold would need to be swapped because the 1zz they had was from a different model car (maybe corolla?) I have been searching your forum for a few hours and I still have no definate answer of the compatability so if you know please hook me up! Thanks and enjoy the pics of my cars, I will continue scouring your forum for info :) thanks again! Steve

the motors are the same for corola, matrix, i think some mr2, potiac vibe, the only diff might be the intake, exhaust and may be some of the oil sensors from diff years, but you could just use everything of yours
actualy i think i read that from 02-03 the motor changed some but i dont think it's anything mayor, everything should still work fine as far as i know
and damnmmmmmm thats expensive for a swap, if you can do it youself, buy a engine jack for $200, and a tool box for about $120, its a great learning experience, i did it myself,
any ?? ask. you might reach me better at madangel1234@yahoo.com

if you can blow that much just get a 2zz
and mayor damage???, usless the block is seriously scared, you can find a used head for a few hundred buck and the pistons are only $50 each, and thats from toyota, just make sure you clean EVERYTHING inside for metal flakes and you should be good
too bad you so far, i would do it for you

I would definately do the swap, the problem is the time involved....I had months to swap the motor in my Mitsu, he NEEDS the car now and I don't have the time with my job and school and everything.
I have not personally seen the internals of the blown motor, but I am told every piston is destroyed, so who knows if the rods are bent, etc. Are there differences in the Auto motor versus the Manual motor? Year differences? Model differences?

there no more time involved, just get everyhing you need, the motor will bolt up to any of the trans, get,
motor
harness
ecu
passenger side top engine mount is different
intake and exhaust manifolds
throtle cable from cruise to engine
and your done!!!
coil packs are differect also but you should get everything with, power steering pump is different too. i have one im trying to sell with everything but it has the lower comp pistons, so its realy setup for turbo, if you want check it is the "parts for sale" forum

Wait, what are you saying we need these parts for? We want to stay with the 1zz motor, just not sure of what year/make/model we can use. If any of the bolt on parts are different from a (for example) a 2004 Corolla 1zz motor then we will just swap over the parts from his old motor...... right?

Your best bet is to a find a 1zz out of a celica. Any year will do from 00-05 the 03 and up have corrected the some of the oil consumption problems in previous years. If you have a manual make sure you get an engine that came out of one too. Its just easier and they're various parts that are slightly different between the autos and manual. The brake fluid reservior is one. A buddy of mine was quoted 120 bucks for the manual one when he was doing his auto to manual swap.

Thanks!
I have read that people use the Corolla 1zz, but there is a missing driveshaft bracket that needs the block to be tapped, that is something we don't want to deal with. So I guess when shopping for the motor we should be looking for that driveshaft loop (bracket)..... The guy in RI I talked to today told me that the 1zz motor they have is from the vibe/matrix.... is that block missing the bracket as well?

Well, we have the old motor to pull parts from.....

Do any of the year Corolla's have the driveshaft bracket???
Is there a "how to" on the procedure?
If this would work it would save us from buying a $2,300 00-03 Celica GT motor and we could get a 00-03 Corolla motor for about $600!!! Thats a huge difference...

those were parts you would need for the 2zz. and i didn't know about that driveshaft bracket, but i was just working on a corolla this weekend, it was auto, but i think i did notice that, my bad
other than that just take everything from yours

I don't know much about engines, but I do know that there were very slight changes (mostly ecu tuning, i believe) between different years. the 00 & 01 years were the same though, if that helps. Sucks about the car, though.

Okay, but the ECU isn't going to change. It will be the original Celica GT ECU with the new Corolla 1zz, now as long as the 1zzfe from the Corolla is the same as the 1zzfe from the Celica GT then we are good to go.
Also, can someone please answer this for me?

make sure about that driveshaft mount, if its auto you migh not even need it,
other than that it will work just make sure you use all the sensors from the old motor if the new motor you get is from another year.
seriously, i have a gt, and i have swaped a cilinder head on a corolla, they are the exact same except for the intake and exhaust manifold. the tunning is diferent and the throtle body is smaller, thats why it makes less power, and it is also why i am telling you to just use all the sensors off yours

that sucks dude. i have to drop about the same from a hydrolock. but they want more for the engine and less for the install. good luck

okay. so we are going to go ahead and get a Corolla motor. So to break it down we will need:
1zzfe 00+ Corolla Motor
Intake manifold from the old GT motor
New Intake Manifold gasket
Exhaust manifold from the old GT motor
Sensors from the old GT motor
Tap and mount old GT axle bracket (pass side)
is that it???

anyone?
and the throtle body is smaller, Not certain, but I think he is correct & you can swap your original in.

Mandangel, thanks so much for checking up on this and helping. So, here is the list/swap info I have compiled:
Parts:
1zzfe Corolla Long Block (Any particular year best?)
New Toyota Intake Manifold Gasket
New Toyota Belts (if needed)
Swap: (from old GT 1zzfe to new block)
GT Intake manifold
GT Exhaust manifold (already DC Sports)
GT Sensors (not sure which?)
GT Passenger Side Axle Bracket
GT Throttle Body
GT Intake (already Injen)
GT Coolant Lines (?)
Modify:
Drill/tap block to accept pass/axle bracket
If you can fill in anything I missed let me know, but I think this should be good right?
