View Full Version : Nitrous oxide is a drug, right? I'm addicted. A review of the Celi-35 shot.

Alright, here's the review for those of you that are wondering. After a full day worth of testing and tuning, plus dyno runs, I didn't have much left in my bottle, yesterday. This is my first experience with a small shot on my Celica. It's a NX GenX2 with all the mentionable goodies.

So, after doing a day's worth of errands (groceries, purse shopping, the usual), I finally got time to head to National Auto Parts and re-fill my 10 lb. bottle.

It cost me 37 bucks, and I learned something very valuable:

Do not give your bottle to them warm, if possible, yank it out the night before and stick it in your freezer. Apparently, the warmer the bottle is, the harder it is to fill up with N20. The gentleman at the counter pretty much said that anybody else wouldn't accept the bottle at the temp it was currently else, but he said he'd fill it for me.

So BAM, got the bottle filled.

Re-installing wasn't too difficult, but one word of caution for future users...try to find a hand grip for the Auto Bottle Opener. It's a plastic sleeve that fits over the nut of the metal fastener. It makes removing the fastener, a helluva lot easier, and saves wear and tear on the nut.

Double-checked the connections, made sure the bottle heater was working along with the auto-bottle opener. Good to go, let's roll.

Okay, it's like this. It feels like a whole new car.

It's not as explosive as I would have thought it to be, but man, it sure does feel like heaven.

Let me just say this about N20, there's no waiting, it's immediate, and it feels TOTALLY natural. It's almost like it's not even there (except when you punch it HARD). After taking the same corners in the WRX, yesterday, I can definetly say that I'm VERY happy with N20.

I think with just a 35, since it's not exactly a huge leap, it makes the car feel like what it should be putting out N/A. It accelerates much more smoothly, there's more power at lower RPMs, and the car is a monster on the 1-2 shift.

It's obvious after making a few runs on the highway and a deserted backstreet, that this car really comes into its own, it seems more driveable, more easy to manage, and simply fantastic on the turns..

After hearing all the hubbub about not being able to use N20 in the corners, I'm gonna have to disagree with the general idea. Maybe if I was using a bigger shot, it'd be a problem (of course it would), but when I was taking those curves (it's a kickass backstreet), I was flying through them like a banshee outta hell.

The ability to enter a corner, hit the apex, and then throttle out of the corner was VASTLY improved without disturbing the balance of the car. I made several different runs, back and forth through about two S curves and one 90 turn. The power delivery was smooth and generous on the S-turns, and the 90 degree was awesome, it was my first taste of the true power of the N20 shot.

After making the runs, I settled in at the end of the street (a convenient dead end), and prepped for launch.

Raised it to 4,500, dropped it, let her grip, and then mashed the pedal to the floor. Woah..major wheel hop (took care of it) shifted nice and quick at the rev limit, chirped pretty hard through second, and just kept going. I got up to about 75 pretty quickly.

For comparison, I switched off the N20 on the way back. Ugg...I feel like a slug all of a sudden.

I launched two more times on the juice, feathered the clutch a bit more, and really got the launches down. God, I love it, it's awesome. And it's only a 35!!

Welps, after that, I took it on the freeway and almost went into hypovelemic shock as the blood left my head as hit the on-ramp off of 56th street....for those that don't know it's a nice S-turn that leads you onto the highway. It's a great set because you're going down for a bit, so the g's really make you feel faster.

As for the highway, same ol', same ol', running through the gears is much more quicker, and 6th gear is actually usable now.

The cool thing was that I had a guy come up beside me in a Thunderbird. At first I thought he wanted to race, but he put his hand to his ear (like Hulk Hogan), so I revved it, dropped it down a gear, and left him....slowed back down, he clapped his hands, I waved bye, and then exited for home. :gap:

IF anything, this has proven to me, that I've gotta find a way to pump this car up at LEAST another 35 N/A for daily driving. I don't think I can live without the N20. I'm definetly going to get another 10lb bottle in the back when I bump up to a 50 or 60 shot.

All in all, fabulous stuff. Really fabulous stuff. I can't wait to move up to a 50 shot.

Sorry for the long topic, but it's just something I had to share...thanks!

Sounds good. I'm still debating whether I want to put a 50 shot in my car.

You know, I was really scared of using the N20 on my baby...but after having a good hour on the bottle, I'm not anymore.

With a 35, there's no noticeable difference in the feel of the engine, besides the fact that it's pulling at a pretty good clip. It just seems like something awoke in the engine, and just said "Yo!". :D

As for a 50, once I've had some time with the 35, I'm gonna switch out. This will probably be pretty soon, too.

I can definetly see why this stuff is so addicting, and why people just like to go higher and higher...it is definetly a drug...and I'm not laughing. Pun intended. :gap:

hey.. how much did you pay for your kit and is that the one with all the accessories? (ie bottle warmer, purge, blow down tube and all the other safty gear) gettin a lil fussy waiting for turb kit and thinking bout going nitrous. im thinking bout just the basic kit and a purge. close to a G is too much for me for all the extras. i have a gt and i would prolly run a 50. was the install very difficult?

glad to hear you're enjoying the bottle! its stories like this post that make me wanna order up a kit right now! keep us updated with your nitrous adventures.

You've probably already checked this out, but this post has got a good idea of what it costs now.

I got all the stuff in mine off of a group buy, so I saved a bit. I pretty much got every single thing except for the fancy-schmancy 3 button switch thingy.

i got a 75 shot and that thing fukin rips. and yea deff always freeze yur bottle to get the full 10 lbs in. its like when you raise the temp in the bottle there is more pressure so if yur tank is a room temp and the refill tank is at room temp they the bottle will only hold so much before it starts pushin back on the refill bottle so when you drop the temp by freezing it there is less pressure against the refill tank so more full botle.

you should get a new clutch and lightened flywheel and you'll love it even more

N2O really sounds cool! Too bad it's illegal here in Europe, only allowed on track. :( Insurance companies would commit suicide when you even mention the word Nitrous...

HEY, I don't talk alot, I'm just in VERBOSE mode. (Anyone play any Infocom games?) :gap:

I only have the TRD Sports clutch, but during installation, I had the flywheel removed, resurfaced, and balanced for quicker throttle response.

I did quite a bit of reading before I purchased my clutch, and I found out that you don't really have to buy a lightened flywheel, just adjust the one you have. It's a wee bit cheaper than purchasing a brand new one, also.

I also didn't want to sacrifice any driveablility of the car, which is my daily driver, and a car I really love to cruise around in.

I figure which one is the better deal, having a totally new flywheel installed or just lighten the one you have. It works fantastic, either way, and I could tell the difference immediately. I couldn't get outta the parking lot upon initial install, because I was spinning my tires every time..heheh.

As for the TRD Sports Clutch, I think it's excellent. I've heard that the ACT clutch is a bit more race inspired, but I've no qualms with the TRD. It's one of the few GOOD parts that TRD has put out that has helped with acceleration in this car.

The clutch travel must have been adjusted by someone (the installer at Toyota) who knew what they were doing, as it is extremely short, and to be honest, it's like an on/off switch or something. You have just enough room to feather for a launch, and the rest of the shifts are mind boggingly easy.

I'd say I have about 3/4 of a foot worth of clutch travel for a comparison. I love it, it's great.

I even had a compliment from the guy at Fastlane about it. I think it works well, and I suggest everyone get theirs taken in a bit.

It's one of the first things I plan on doing to the WRX, cuz the travel on that bad boy is ridiculously long.

I hope that helped... :D

Finally, I couldnt agree with you more over the 35shot! Today I picked up my NGK plugs, swapped them out and went for a run. :)

It feels awesome...damn car should have come like this stock I tell you...serious pull! I wasnt too impressed with 2nd gear...but god damn does 3rd/4th ever pull hard...very hard!

Best money I have ever spent on a mod... ;)

you know youre only supposed to use nitrous at WOT (wide open throttle...foot on the floor)

right?

just making sure...i dont want you to break something.

Er...what makes you think we're doing it any other way?

I believe most of us did quite a bit of research on N20 use. We might be NEW to using it, but that's about it.

All of the GENX kits come with a WOT switch...to keep us dumbasses from killing our cars. :gap:

what could happen if you dont use it in wot?

you wont be running as much fuel into the engine which will probbaly lean out the misture with n20 and then probably blow or break something... not a pretty thought

so the stage 1 is the basic kit rite? and the genX2 is all the lil accessories. how much it just the stage 1?

I was at a local motorshop today looking at a ZEX kit with a 10 lb bottle, and jets for 55, 65, and 75 hp shots. Does anyone have any comments about that kit. I know it is very driver friendly, and I've heard you are able to run it constantly, as opposed to just at WOT. If any one has any other info, please let me know. Thanks!

You can run any Nitrous kit on the market on "all the time" instead of a WOT switch...question is...why would you?!?!

Play it safe...use the WOT switch, dont run to lean...and enjoy the safe side of nitrous.
