my brakes are squeaking

In the front or in the back? If its in the front do u have any visible rust on your discs? If its the drums only way to check is to remove them.

could it be that my pads are just woren down?

It could be that its metal on metal meaning your pads are worn or you may have rust on your discs, but that should rub off after a few hard brakes. Only way to know is to have them checked.
