To tell you the truth I honestly dont know what the synchro is and what it actully does. I have a good idea. But any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Im asking because after having problems with high rev up****s from first to second it finally moved to downshifts as well. Now whenever I downshift into second gear I get a rejection feeling and a NASTY grind. Keep in mind these are downshifts at low revs. It all started today. Im gonna take it into the dealership Monday to get it looked at. Im assuming its the Synchro for 2nd gear. Though could it be another and or a different problem too?

Synchro helps align the gear's teeth.... soemthing like that... anyhow your prob def sounds like a Synchro. cuz it effects only one gear.

Thanks for the info

Yeah Im pretty sure its the synchro. By the way, my car has 23,400 miles on it. I shouldnt have a problem getting it fixed under warrenty, should I?

cross your fingers that your dealership is cool becuz they can say your synchro is shot from abuse.. and not cover it under warranty..

well in case you didnt notice larry Brett is actually an "extreme Racer" which means that its probably not his fault... go for it brett and let me know how it goes.. worst comes to worst they'll tell you to pay for it and you'll have to call the national lines.

Really? Even with only 23400 miles they can still claim abuse? I thought Synchros where suppose to last a long ass time? I mean even if there is abuse, should it be going out at 23400 miles? at what mileage do they generally go out at? hmmmm... I have new tires, so its not like they can look and say excessive tire wear = abuse.. hmm....I dunno. How else can they claim abuse? Sorry for all the questions!

I had around the same mileage 27,000 when my 2 gear syncro went bad. Syncros should last along time 23,000 is not enough to ruin them. Toyota tried to claim my second gear synro was abused. My dealer then had a Toyota Rep come down and after a couple weeks. The Rep said Toyota would fix it but only if I put my stock shifter back in (I have an B&M SS). I then told my dealer that it was BS a SS has nothing to do with weak synros and he ageed to leave it in. I had to replace the clutch which did cost me $220 bucks out of the whole ordeal but the syncro did get fixed. Hope its an easier ordeal for you Toyota always tries point to abuse dont back down. Thanks for the Info 4B. thats more reassuring then Larrys comment . I hope its not to much of a hassle. My engine is stock, so I dont know what exactly they can pin it on. I'll tell you how it goes Monday

What kind of tranny fluid are you using? I've had similar grinding symptoms in the past when using Mobil-1 (although not usually at low rpm). Redline MTL seems to work much better.

yeah.. well im harsh becuz I get nothing covered at dealerships.. everything is abuse in their terms and they are correct.. i beat the hell out of it.. but 2nd gear syncrho shouldnt have gone this fast..

Jlevy, I have just whats been put in there from stock. I dont think its the Transmission Fluid, that is the problem. The Second Gear Synchro is shot. And I Havent abused my car that bad. I've only been to the track twice. and I dont really street race all that much.Maybe a handfull of cars per month? I still dont get why it went out so soon. When dothey usually go out at?

My 4th gear syncro went bad at around 9k and I was pissed that it went so fast. Luckily I seem to have one of the nice dealerships and they didn't give me any crap. They replaced all the syncros and 1 gear. Of course it took about a month for me to get my car back.

A month? Well I took it in this morning, they said they would need the car all day to look at it, which I could not do. So I said I would drop it off tomorrow. I just told them my second gear was gridnign whenever I downshifted, no hassle no nothing just said bring it on by and we'll look at it. Ohwell. Tomorrow is DD I guess.

When I took my car in for bad syncros they told me they should last 60,000 miles under normal driving conditions before they need to be replace . I had my second gear syncro change at 19,000 miles .

Ok. Just got done talking to the Toyota Dealership. They are gonna replace my clutch, which comes in Thursday cause they are not sure if its the synchro yet. They had to call a National Service Tech Number and I had to wait til they got done talking to them before any word on what was gonna happen, but so far thats what I know.

They also said pretty much that its a 1 time thing. So I guess if I blow my engine (Highly doubtful!)The clutch would be picked up under my tab?

I didnt have any problems with the dealership (Nor should I) It went nice and easy. I'm just glad it wasn't a horror story like I have read. Well, I hope everything goes fine. Just thought I would fill everyone in. Later!
