View Full Version : Help me decide... Type R or AUTO GT-S??

Guys... i have been put into a dilemma for the past few days..
Ok, Sport Compact is grey imports here, i currently own a 2000 Auto GT-s with 50,000km on the odo. Last week i saw an Integra Type-R, silver (Jap Spec) year 2002 for sale with only 26,000km on the odo. i only need to pay extra for about USD 2,000 to swap with that Type R.
But i like the look of my Celi (i got the full TRD Action Package), and the traffic here is really really bad (that why no one wants a Sport Compact). I think the Celi has sexier looks and lower stance than the Type R, But on the other hand, I like the Type R sharp handling, and acceleration. Celi Interior also look better (I like the center console), but The Type R comes with Momo and Recaro seats
Also, I know my car very well, but i don't know the detailed information on the Type R. the guy selling it says he needs fast cash, but i don't know.
So.... what u giys think? should i stick Or swap?

Get an ITR, it is rare. A celica is a dime in a dozen.

Yeah I want a Type R, it's rare and quick too.... but The ITR looks doesn't turn heads as the Celi does.
Well.. it has been a difficult situation.... Problem is the traffic here is really so bad, it could take an hour for 8 km drive!!!!!

also... i have put so much effort in maintaining the Celi , so that it still run as good as new (well some minor problems do happen).. With the ITR... i don't know if that guy always keep good maintenance or whether it has been raced a lot or not. It is gonna be more expensive to maintain ITR, since it is rarer than the Celi....
Any ideas? what type of Honda/ Acura cars that have substitutable parts with the Integra?

Its a Honda it should last a while even if it was driven hard. It shouldn't be to expensive to maintain.

I used to have 1998 ITR when I was living in Sydney, and i do miss their sharp handling , which is way better than my Auto GTS. But again, since Jakarta's traffic is one of the worst in the world, that's why I opted for an Auto GTS. now i might wanna change my mind......

Well you could be very right... but here we don't get Honda sport compact models as official line up. No Civic Si, Accourd Euro, Accord Coupe, Integra model.... we only got Honda Fit, Civic Vti, Accord Sedan, and Odyssey..
I might have to source it from overseas for parts, as I have done with my Celi (since it is also not an Official Toyota model here), but i find Celica parts are easier to find here.
$2000 extra to get the Type R is a very good bargain in my opinion, much better option than to Turbo or Supercharge the Celi, which will still be left behind an ITR, right?

I seriously doubt that last part, but its potential is a lot cheaper to get, I'd got for the itr just cause its relatively rare.

The rareness of the ITR, would make me more difficult for service or replacement part here....

Stick with the Celica.
I think people seem to just pass over the part where you have mentioned the horrific traffic at least 2-3 times in this thread.
This ITR was probably driven to the ground. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
With regard to the other opinions in this thread, just remember, some of the posts are from 16 year olds who mean well, but don't know that much.

That's what i am really afraid of, since the ads has been on the paper for at least a month. i have physically seen the car last week, well it was really neat from the outside, but looks could be deceiving, right? It was just well too below the market value, at least by $10,000. for the same year car.

ITR is definitely way better performance then you'll ever get out of your Auto GT-S, but if you have no where to drive it what's the point? It seems like you might be losing a reliable daily driver for performance you can't use, from a car that may or may not be reliable. I know for a fact that a lot of stuff never shows up on carfax, and that there is massive risk associated with buying any used car from a private party.
I'de recommend anyone in the states to get a Type-R over an auto GT-S, but we have lots of room to drive over here. I hate my GT-S any time I'm stuck in bad traffic, so your No-Go-Auto is a blessing in disguise.

$10,000 below? Run and don't look back. Sounds like something is definitely wrong with it.
The Integra Type-R is a driver's car - it is a fantastic vehicle that outhandles, outbrakes, and out accelerates the Celica all day long - the best front-wheel drive car ever made in my opinion.
An Auto GT-S is a chick car - and I wouldn't even let my own daughter drive one.
As for looks, a clean, well done Type-R can turn just as many heads.

If you want comfort and convenience stand pat with the Celica.

Yep... it's about $10,000 below. The Market value for 2002 Type R here is about $38,000 but he's selling it for $27,500......
Yes, it's the RSX Type R (DC5).... i've been looking for the DC2 Type R, which i believe is the best Type R ever produced.
Yeah... i think for the moment might have to stick with the Celi, rather than to regret it afterwards if i were to buy that particular Type R....
Thanks for the input guys... but i will wanna get a Type R someday later, haha

Yeah. You can buy the Type-R, but don't get rid of the Celica completely. Better to have both, just in case one or the other craps out.
DOn't even have to think about it. Type R hands down.

the ITR may be difficult to get parts for considering you are in INDONESIA, listen here people... hes in a very high traffic Jakarta Indonesia. I like the ITR, one of if not the best front wheel drive N/A car ever made, however as a DD i would choose an automatic that you know is working. Nobody wants a project car if they dont have a different DD car.

exactly.
I would test drive it, have it checked out by a reputable mechanic, and then think heavily about it. Definitely a step up from an auto GT-S. But also consider how much you'll be driving and how much will be in high traffic (and whether or not you wanna deal with a manual for that)

Guys... i made up my mind to stick with my Celi....
Agree we can't speed here due to traffic (but no speed limit though), and that's why 80% of the cars sold here are of auto trans, since it make sense, and more comfortable to drive in very heavy traffics.
after deep thoughts, i just think that Celi is too beautiful to let go, and after all we are all Celi lovers, right?
Thanks for the inputs guys....really appreciate

Only get the ITR if you get it in the obnoxious big bird yellow
if you HONESTLY can't handle a stick in traffic, you have no business driving a stick.
I have lived in DC for 8 years - some of the worst traffic in the country - I have driven stick every day of my life, and never once considered an auto because its easier in traffic.

correction - I have considered the 997 Porsche 911 Turbo in auto, because it does 0-60 in 3.4 with the auto and a sluggish 3.7 with the manual.

true, however, a more correct way to see the probability of a car getting stolen is a ratio between the number of a certain car produced to how many are stolen.

How can you compare the an AT Celica with a 2002 ITR MT??? thats wired.
I had so many experience racing with ITR. both DC2R and DC5R.
Sure... they are better in every aspect, but it all depends on the driver.
After I have spend time and money upgrading both the car and the driving technique. I have concluded that ITR isn't that fast. Maybe they are fast on the track, but this isn't true when you do any kinds of street races.
I had experience chasing DC5R bumper to tail on the mountain road. He can't get away from me. He uses Yokohama racing slick but I am using Bridgestone RE050A (lotus elise OEM equipment). All the way for 15mins.
Plus, I can't find any real fast DC2R right now. After so many years, their engine already wear out. Me~? I never use 6th gear on the cel. I only use 5th on the highway. You can see the pic what is the common rpm range that I use. Toyota engine is durable... it can still go fast while the Vtec engine couldn't do it anymore after so many years.
ST205 GT4 can't get away from me as well (255PS VS 190PS standard).
Whoever step on it first, whoever has the engine deliver to the ground first.
Spend little more time on your technique before thinking about move on to a faster car. Are you sure you can use 100% of your Celica's potential?

a better grip tyre will be RE01R, better grip on wet but so so performance or wet compare to RE050

Just got a good clean kill with a DC5R tonight.
Rolling start from 30kph.
Bus in the front at the traffic light junction.
That stupid kid used 2nd gear. I shifted down to 1st waiting for him to gun it.
He change lane try to pass the bus and I followed him.
I am using the most powerful gear ratio and he is not.
Change lane and passed him in 3rd gear.
Both stopped at the traffic light
He looked mad and wants another run. But no way the oil price is high, and I am on the way to pick up my friend for dinner. Turn left and he go straight.
So... I hope you can think over about it again. If you change to ITR because of its look and rare. Thats fine because thats personal preference. If you think of it because ITR is fast, than I will say swap your AT gearbox to MT. I am definitely sure that I will lose to him from a dead stop run. However, if you know how your car perform and you are doing rolling start, I don't think ITR is that much faster. Plus, you said your like the look of Celica. Why not keep it then?
