i bought a paging remote start alarm system, Aladdin A-2000, off of ebay last week and just got it today. when i went to Circut city to see how much it would cost to install it they said that its illegal for them to install a remote start sys. on a manual transmission car. is this true??? they also said the installers need to bypass the clutch for it to work, would this void my warranty??? i hope i didnt just waste money on something i can't even use. if there is anyone around the D.C metro area that can correctly install this i will pay you. Help.

they told me the same thing at my alarm install place... then i got the clifford.. it says on their site that its legal.. and it was... its got a special way of making sure that you dont leave the car in gear... theres also someone on the site who made a sensor out of door alarm magnets.. very clever and it worked...

i have remote start on my standard, and its called by-passing your clutch to engage the ignition to start the car. nothin difficult. the hardest part is getting the tach setting correct w/ the inparticular car.

its not a question of difficult... its a question of legal and safe... if you just bypass the clutch and some dumb valet (or toyota service) guy puts the can in gear and leaves it there and you mistakenly try to start it.. watch out.. cause your car is gonna turn into kit from nightrider...

circuit city won't do it, i've asked them too, but it's not illegal to have on your car as far as i know, just very hard to find people to install it for you.

hell yeah, glad i havent done it yet...knock on wood. but the thing is, to start the car remotely before you get out you must type in a code on the transmitter, take the key out, get out, shut the door and lock it w/ the transmitter. then, to start the car remotely you must do the code that it was programmed to. so the average joe...or toyota tech would not know this. yay clifford

Pushing the clutch to start a car is unique to North Americans as far as I know. Drove many M/T cars in Asia and they didn't have the clutch switch.

ya thats one of the reasons i got the avantguarg... its just impossible to do... you cant leave someone inside cause the radar sensor would go off, you cant reach inside the window cause once you arm all the windows shut... foolproof.. which is what i need.

in the us, by federal regulations, carmakers must have their manuals need to be started by first depressing the clutch pedal...

so it just might be illegal to have a remote start on a manual transmission...

and if this is the case circuit city is limiting their liability by not installing your remote switch

I work at Circuit City in Niles, Ohio. We are not allowed to put remote starters on stick shift cars. i don't work back in the roadshop but i asked about it for my celica and they told me they couldn't. It is able to be done but i hear it is a big pain since there needs to be sensors to make sure the e-brake is on and the car is out of gear.

it's not illegal.. but IF you leave ur car in gear THEN remote start it.. THEN if it does any damage due to that.. like.. if u parked it in front of a pole and hit the pole.. then you can sure the installers for that. pretty werid... same as the tv's in the car. if u get in a accident watching tv while driving. thas the installers fault too.. u can sue them. but i think now.. they do that the gear thing.. where it wont start if ur in gear or somet **** like that...

I have a remote car starter for my 6 speed. With my model its impossible to remote start the car when it is in gear. Here's why: When you park the car, you have to pull the E brake, put the stick in neutral, activate the car starter(button on remote), pull the key out of the ignition, the engine stays running, get out of the car, then shut off engine with the remote.
This way, when you are ready to remote start your car, you know its safe because the only way to "activate" the starter is if you had gotten out of your car when it is in neutral/Ebrake. Believe me, its works perfect!!! Fool proof!!

yep... i got the avantguard, but i set it to auto tranny mode.... i don't wanna deal w/all that bullsh1t just to remote start my car....

if my car starts and hits a pole, it's my own damn fault...

I don't know how much the install was. Mine is a combo alarm and remote car starter, and the whole package including installation was $650 CAN (about $425 US).

it all depends on what alarm it is.... the avantguard is the most complex that i'm aware of.

my old boss to me when i was buying an alarm to install myself
"if you want a headache... get the avantguard, otherwise, get the IQ9000"

I wanted the features, and adding the features of the AG to the IQ9000 would've been more expensive...

headaches so far - proximity sensor is either too sensitive, or not sensitive enough depending on weather!

I knew someone who had on his Viper. He was in front of the car when he hit the button and the car was in gear. he got hit by his Viper and the viper kept going till it hit a wall, he had a smashed leg and the Viper had a smashed front end...Auto start is cool but just be careful using them..=)

man donlt do it it might be cool if your in really cold weather but a guy in houston had this one his car and put his car through his garage door and every thing was in place the only thing was that one of the sensors moved and the alarm thought his car was in nuetral and it was in 1st and endedn up jaking up a bunch of stuff at his house
