I currently have a 87 celica 5spd. with 270,000miles. My brother bought it used when it had 90,000miles and he gave it to me when he graduated from college. Now i'm driving it and car was very reliable and gave me no problem what so ever, infact only thing i had problem was a starter motor and original clutch lasted for 250,000miles before needing a replacement. Now it's time for me to buy a new car and I will give celi to my bro who just got a license. Now my question. Does current celicas are reliable as old ones? I just test drove the 2k2 gts 6spd, and let me tell you the gear box and handling is light years ahead of my celi, but the sound of an engine was loud. I know it is a high performance car, but it was louder than I enticipated. Sales person told me that engine was made by YAMAHA, now that i don't like, i thought YAMAHA was motorcycle manufacturer, was that the reason for loud engine? Anyways I need opinions from gts owners. Any comment are welcome, and thank you for reading my post.
the engine wasn't entirely made by yamaha..... but whatever in stock form it isn't very loud at all.... imho..... reliability is a toss up I suppose. All depends on how you treat it... I havn't had a problem with mine for 30k miles so far. There are people that have been up to 50k or so now with no problems either. I would assume that it's reliable like most all toyotas.

I have a 01 GT... A few peps on the board with the GTS will say that its a good car - come to think about it its a very good car... It being a toyota speaks for itself with regards to reliability... Mis-shifting is the common problem with the GTS other than that everything seems to be great... Hope all goes well with your car shopping... Later

High-revving 4-cylinder cars tend to be noisy, but the advantage is great performance with better-than-average gas mileage. Plus the Celica GTS has something that is good if you are a good driver: The suspension/handling is faster than the car.

I just bought my 2k2 gts about a month ago, and I think its quiet as hell until your doing 45in 4th and downshift into 3rd. (ooohhhh, I love that sound), I liked the gearbox until I accidently shifting to reverse instead of 1 from a light. Almost hit the woman in back of me in her beemer, but it was ok because I didnt. The car is very solid, could be a little stiffer for a sports car but some better springs/wheels/tires and some strut bars should correct it.
You get used to the sound. Just make sure to get a Manual Trans.
